When and why did you begin writing?

At thirteen, I started writing poetry and gut wrenching, heart breaking love stories. At least in my little world, they were way back when. And - NO, they didn’t contain the subjects I write about now. (Wicked grin) I wrote as an outlet for my emotions, I think. I found that I could easily put on paper things I was too shy or insecure to verbalize, at that age.

What inspired you to write your first book?

It wasn’t “what” it was “Who”... New York Times Bestselling Author, Shayla Black encouraged me to stop writing stories that only made it as far as my hard-drive and start getting them published.  She’s an amazing woman who I respect and admire and hold dear to my heart.

Do you have a specific writing style?

Nothing special, usually a pair of pajama pants and a T-Shirt.  *Laugh* Sorry—it’s the first thing that popped into my mind! (No wonder I’m regularly called a smart-ass.) Ah-hemmmm. Honestly, I don’t know that I have a style. I try to spin a semi believable story with characters that aren’t afraid to show their emotions, good or bad or kinky.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I’d love to! Here is an excerpt from “Embracing My Submission”

At seven o’clock on the dot, I knelt on the soft carpet in Drake’s private room. Nervous and trembling, my heart thundered in my chest. All afternoon I’d paced, cried, and worried about what he had in store for me. That is, when I wasn’t mooning over hopeless fantasies of Jordon.

Thoughts of the handsome Dom filled my head almost more than fretting about my punishment. Trying to keep Jordon in perspective, I reminded myself that I’d screwed up far beyond repair and shouldn’t hold on to foolish hope.

Craning my neck, I looked at the clock on the nightstand behind me and trembled in anticipation-laced fear.

7:05. Okay Drake, I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. Let’s get this over with.

7:10. What is taking him so long?

7:15. You’re doing this to fuck with me. I know it!

The snick of the lock disengaging had me quaking with fear. Keeping my eyes glued to the floor, I trembled in silence.

“You’re as beautiful as sunset splayed out in your submissive pose,” Drake praised, and I smiled. “Stand and present.” His voice thundered as goose pimples erupted across my flesh.

My knees wobbled as I stood. With my face still shrouded, I thrust out my arms and pressed my wrists together. The scent of leather filled my nostrils as he bound the soft, fleece-lined leather restraints around my wrists.

“I hope this isn’t a new gown, girl,” he growled in a low voice. The tone in his next breath was harsh as he instructed me not to move. Withdrawing a sparkling silver knife, he slid the blade into the silk material between my breasts. I gasped and tried not to shudder as the knife sliced through the fabric. My gossamer gown silently slithered to the floor and pooled at my feet.

“Thank you for not wearing panties that I’d have to ruin as well,” he whispered close to my ear. “Close your eyes, my sweet. I’d hate for you to see what I have planned for you.”

How did you come up with the title for your current book?

I played a little arm chair psychologist and thought “Okay, what is this girl trying to do?” Then it was easy! She was embracing her submission.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I think the one thing I hope to convey is that it’s OK to be kinky. *Grin*

How much of the book is realistic?

I think there are several parts that “could be” realistic. I know submissive’s struggle with feelings of inferiority when they’re unable to find a Dom. And unfortunately there are monsters who involve themselves in the lifestyle to prey on submissives. That’s one reason why safety in the lifestyle is so important to me.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

No, they’re not. However, I think Julianna has more than a few of my personality quirks. *Grin*

What books have most influenced your life most?

The first book that came to my mind, which has nothing to do with the genre I write, is: “The Color Purple”.  Strength, courage, sacrifices, and never ending desire to follow your dream was inspirational to me. It doesn’t matter what age, you always deserve to find your happiness and that which brings you joy.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Shayla Black. She’s my quintessential mentor and has given me so much of her time, experience, encouragement, and never ending support. I wouldn’t be here today - if not for her.

What book are you reading now, if any?

None right now. Today we finished the final edits on the first book: “One Dom to Love” in a new series, “The Doms of Her Life”, with Shayla Black and Isabella LaPearl. It will be on sale in a few days. And in my spare time (choke, choke, cough, cough) I’m already busy working on the second book in “The Doms of Genesis” series, titled: “Masters of My Desire”. I hope to have it available in early 2013. But I have a Reading List a mile long. Hopefully soon, I’ll be able to dig into some of them.

Her feelings for Brock grow every day until he is the object of her desire, until one day right after her remission when he leaves and doesn't come back. Heartbroken she takes steps to reclaim her life and decides that life includes Brock.

The interesting thing about this book is Viv's strength and weakness. She loves Brock but when she finds out what is under the veneer, she runs. Brock is into BDSM and that is too much for her to understand. Her friend is kind of a BDSM Yoda and sends her back in the right direction. I would love a story about her. There was a lot going on behind the scenes with Anne.

This book is give and take, love and lust, betrayal and hope for the future. The sex scenes were squirm worthy, the action right on and the dialog well done. I just wish Viv would have stopped to think a little more before she went running every time things got tough.

This book was a steamy BDSM fun land and I am ready for another book by this author. Bring it on Brandi!!!

1. How did the story line for Damned and Defiant come into being?

Dante started out as the bad guy in Book one, Desert of the Damned and

a reader emailed me asking if he would find love in the end. I hadn’t

intended on him becoming the hero in the series but that email gave me

an idea for an interesting twist to the story arc. He wasn’t the truly

evil one, Gwyllain, the demoness was. Dante showed some signs of being

redeemable. He was part human and did have a few ‘good’ moments in the

book.

2. What is your favorite thing about the book?

 Both Haley the heroine and Dante the hero make difficult decisions in the story. And they

both change a great deal. I like how they handle an impossible situation with courage.

3. Tell us your thoughts about how sexy lust demons can be.

 I’ve read about psychic vampires in Jonathan Maberry’s Cryptopedia book and decided to create a race of immortal demons who need to assimilate lifeforce energy in order to survive. This energy is also necessary to maintain the existence of their artificial micro-world called Anartia. Anartia is a prison world that looks like paradise.

4. Do you have a playlist?

 I have a long playlist on my iPod/iTunes. I like a wide variety from rock, to industrial, electronic, to New Age.

Lately I like listening to Clubbed to Death by Furious Angels.

Something with an intense, electronic beat. Or sometimes I listen to

instrumental New Age stuff like, Far Away Trains Passing By by Ulrich Schnauss. It’s sort of white noise to keep me focused.

5. Zumba or yoga?

 Yoga.

 I don’t have the coordination for Zumba. LOL

6. Thai vs. Cheeseburgers?

 Thai

7. What three things would you want on hand if you actually

encountered a demon-lusty or not?

 A nebula stone and to know how to

use its powers. A wise Shaman or Sha Warrior who knows how to block the energy drain from a demon. Or a very fast car or motorcycle for escape.

8. What are some of your favorite naughty authors?

 Sooo many. Joey Hill, Lynn LaFleur, Maya Banks, Jaid Black, Laurann Dohner. Just to name a few.

9. What was the toughest scene you ever had to write?

 A death scene in Wild Jade. I cried when I wrote it. It still makes me teary eyed when I read it. But there is a happy ending.

10. What other writing projects are you working on?

 Book 2 in my TropiX series. Spring Break is Book 1. It’s an erotic contemporary.

Also an erotic suspense and an erotic paranormal. Keeping busy.

Dante and Haley are enigmatic characters. They have known each other before this book, but finally realize their passion. You get to see the trust begin with them and blister into a hot relationship that begins to smolder. Very nice! Smoking hot sex scenes and a forever love. Because they knew each other before, this book is about the coming together aspect, but I didn't feel lost.

Basing it in London and using places that I've seen myself, and adding in elements of humour.

3. What is your favorite "genre" of erotica to write? BDSM, lesbian, paranormal?

I like writing good old fashioned straight erotica and erotic romance

because it means I get to write about sexy men. But I like writing all of it, really. It's nice having so much to choose from!

4. What was the hardest scene you ever had to write? Was it an erotic scene or something else?

I would say it was the sex scene from my upcoming short story, Ditched. It's the first m/m story I've written, and it was difficult to make it clear which 'him' was which, and so on. It's always a challenge when writing same-sex stuff, but I guess I'm more used to writing f/f stuff so I don't find that so tough any more.

5. Martini or Margarita?

Neither. Give me a vodka and coke.

6. Are there plans to do another anthology of Lover Unexpected?

I have no idea, you'd have to ask the publisher. I just answered a call for submissions and was lucky enough to be accepted.

7. What are some of your favorite erotic authors?

Portia Da Costa, Saskia Walker, Janine Ashbless, K D Grace, Kay Jaybee, Emma Hillman... and so many more!

8. What are some of your hobbies when you are not crafting wonderful

stories?

Reading, watching films and TV, walking, visiting historical and interesting

places.

9. Do you have music in mind when you write? What are some of your favorite

sexy songs?

Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I work in silence. I wouldn't say it was a hugely sexy song, but Time is Running Out by Muse is often playing when I'm writing sex scenes.

10. What are you currently working on?

I'm currently working on a novel based in a country house. I don't want to give too much away, but it's about a new property manager who gets into trouble with the boss and accepts a set of challenges to get her out of trouble.

What I Liked:

This book had a great array of authors to meet and grow to love. Lesbian erotica has its own flavor and I am a sucker for stories about friends becoming lovers as was the case in Lucy Felthouse's Finally Found. When friends discover they have loved each other for years and are finally able and willing to do something about it, the story heats up like a flamethrower. 

What I Didn't:

Not a thing.

Overall:

This collection is wonderful and I hope Evernight will publish a second volume. Lucy Felthouse captured the feeling of love's discovery in the arms of a friend, complete with some very hot sex scenes and genuine love. I enjoyed the other stories as well and will be checking out the other authors work for more titles to add to my TBR list. If you enjoy good lesbian erotica, then you need to check out this book.

An Interlude With Author Lila Shaw

What I Liked:

Any stories about succubi automatically make it onto my reading list. The whole idea about an aggressive female apologetically out searching for sex and living from the life force of men is pretty interesting. Especially if the men involved deserved it. In this case, you have a succubus at the end of her contract and some pretty public sex if she wants out. Enter the hunky hero and you have a lusty romp through the bowels of Hell that will singe your hair.

What I Didn't:

It ended. Double damn. I want more!

Overall:

I loved this short tale of a succubus who was ready to end her contract and will be looking for more of these from the amazing Lila Shaw. Hot smoking sex, hunky demons, lusty succubi...what more can a girl ask for in a novella? The setting for her to go into the Underworld was a particular favorite. Excellent and spicy read.

In a kingdom where women outnumber men, marriage has more in common with slavery than romance. Lady Otsana certainly isn't willing to surrender her freedom and dumb herself down, not even for a blue blood. She's having too much fun disguising herself and bedding the hot, red-blooded type in the neighboring lands.

Prince Koldo is not too keen on marrying either, certainly not to that know-it-all Otsana his parents favor. He'd rather continue his intense sexual Olympics with a commoner named Fleur. Little does he know Otsana and Fleur are the same woman.

When the King throws a ball and a contest to choose Koldo's bride, Otsana must make a difficult decision. Will she enter the contest of the Golden Pea and risk all for a chance at love, or will she play it safe but give up Fleur's lover forever?

What I Liked:

This book was a bawdy romp through the Princess and the Pea story that I used to love as a child. I really love it now! The quest for a wife has always been one of those royal endeavors that can be horrific. Koldo has met his match in a maid he knows as Fleur, but she knows him for who he really is. As Fleur, Ostana can be a sexual wanton and it was so much fun to read! Koldo can barely walk the next day. How funny is that!? When the King makes the ultimatum and Koldo holds a special kind of contest to choose his bride, I knew this story was going to be amazing.

What I Didn't:

There was a humorous edge to the fairy tale construct that disconcerted me at first.

Overall:

This book has some smokin hot sex, a mystery about who is who and who wants what. The naughty fairy tale style was great and the humor that threw me at the onset of the story was well played as the book continued on. I loved the part with the golden pea-you have to read it find out!

It was a ton of fun! I've always been fascinated by the story of the Princess and the Pea, which Vixen is, of course, based on. The tongue-in-cheek adaptation of it--"Once Upon a Mattress" starring Carol Burnett, one my favorite comediennes of all time--was wonderful too. What drew me was the idea that royalty was so different and so removed from the common rabble, that a princess would find even the tiniest of foreign objects in her bed irritating to her delicate flesh and a deterrent to a good night's sleep. How hard was that to turn on its head? My "princess" not only enjoys staying up all night, she adores foreign objects in her bed and in her delicate flesh! LOL

2. What are some other naughty fairy tales that spark your interest?

I've only read three other NFT's (so far) from my Evernight sisters, and all were great fun. I have a couple of others queued up on my Kindle, too, so I really can't choose from those already out there. But if I have time some day, I've already started plotting "The Three Corporate Pigs" about a woman who works for/with three sexist pigs that she, ahem, systematically disavows of that particular prejudice. Have I mentioned that I adore feisty, assertive heroines? No shrinking violets in my stories.

3. What was the hardest or funniest scene you have ever written?

I think the funniest would be the romance novel parody dream sequences in my debut novel, All's Fair in Love and War. Of those, I'd probably choose the first one in the book where an historical version of the book's heroine, Shelby, is accosted by an historical version of the hero, Colin, in his role as a ruthless highwayman who seeks to have his wicked way with her.

4. The use of the golden Pea in the Vixen and the Pea was inspirational! What inspired that idea?

**laughs** Probably Fifty Shades of Grey (yes, I've read them all) and my own laughable experience attempting the same maneuver as Anastasia. 'Nough said.

5. In your new book, Soul of the Succubus, you write about a succubus. I have always loved stories like that. What sparked the idea?

Oooh, my favorite subject. I adore writing about succubi, absolutely love them because they are powerful women who thrive on sex and are aggressive and unapologetic about getting it. Plus the supernatural element is always fun to play with. She's not nearly as popular as the vampire or werewolf, so I can make up almost whatever history, abilities or "rules" I like without offending reader expectations.

I've actually written over twenty short stories about succubi that I pulled into a collection, all linked together with a series of introductory quotes from fictional books, training manuals and speeches that might have been written for a succubus and her peers. A short story collection from a relatively new writer, however, is a tough sell, especially since only the final batch of stories have happy endings. Most publishers require a happy ending for all the tales, but many of mine are erotic horror, not romance, especially the earlier ones. The overall arc of the collection follows the emotional life cycle of a succubus:  from the terror of creation to anger to acceptance to playful enjoyment and finally to redemption in a variety of ways. I wrote them in different genres and settings, from space opera to steampunk to western with plenty of stops in between--a decadent succubus sampler. No takers so far, so my plan B is to expand and market them as stand-alone novelettes and/or short stories. So stay tuned!

6. What do you think the most challenging thing is about being a succubus?

Probably meeting her emotional and inspirational needs. Sex is sustenance but not necessarily the means to  long-term fulfillment. Beyond survival, what is her higher purpose for existing and how does she achieve it? If it's love, I suspect falling for a mortal man would be pretty draining, watching them age and die, sort of like having a pet.

7. What are you currently working on?

So many things because I write under three different pen names for three different audiences. As Lila, however, I have another succubus shorty revolving around Greek and Roman mythology that I'm nearing the finish line on. My other me's have a novel nearly ready to submit to agents and/or publishers, a followup short story to my debut romantic mystery and book two of an urban fantasy (in addition to edits of book one).

On August 17th my superhero novella called Prometheus Unstitched releases, so I (Lila) will also be busy marketing.

8. Do you have music that invokes an erotic mood when you write, or do you prefer silence?

I prefer silence when I write, but music is a huge inspiration for plotting and future writing sessions, erotic or otherwise. My family teases me for being a bit of a Rainman when it comes to music I listen to in my car. I tend to play the same CDs over and over again. I associate certain songs with plots, characters, scenes, and hearing the music gets my brain on that story's wavelength. Some music is sexy, some is light-hearted (because I gotta have my humor), and some is very dark and melodramatic.

9. Will you be writing more books with a succubus theme? (I hope!!!)

Oh, yes, ma'am. You can count on it.

10. What inspired you to write erotica and what would you tell someone who is just starting out?

I started off writing sweet romance and nonfiction humor. I added erotica solely to amuse and arouse myself at first. Then I wanted to see if I could write it well enough to do the same for third parties (versus making them cringe or snicker, and not just at the funny parts.) My first public posting of my work was for an erotica blog contest. I got ZERO public opinion votes. None, nada, nil. But, always a bit of an experimenter at heart, I wrote my entry in second person from a man's perspective. Yeah, pretty limited audience and not at all derived from what I knew. Lesson learned.

For newer writers, I would first say write what you like to read, and don't write anything you would melt into a puddle of embarrassment over if asked to read aloud. Readers can tell if you're squeamish.

Second is know your audience. Women readers typically want to "feel" the romance and emotion of the sex and require a broader spectrum of the senses be engaged throughout--the touch of warm lips on the nape of a neck, the scents and flavors of arousal and passion, the vocalizations of emotion more than the expletives of pleasure. Men, on the other hand, are more visual so those types of descriptions need to be most vivid.
