Excerpt from On Her High Horse by Lucy Felthouse:
There was a knock at the door. Brett looked up from where he was transferring hand-written notes onto the practice’s computer system—he hadn’t yet gotten comfortable with taking the iPad out on calls. He was paranoid he’d drop it in a cow pat, or worse. “Yes, come in!”
One of the veterinary surgery’s receptionists—an efficient blonde called Natasha—sidled in, a wry expression on her face. “Hi, Brett. I’m really sorry to bother you, but there’s a woman on the phone, and she’s being, um, rather rude.”
Frowning, Brett replied, “Who is it? And why is she being rude?”
Natasha blew out a breath and shrugged. “She won’t tell me what the issue is. Won’t even tell me what animal she has. She just keeps saying she’ll only speak to a ‘trained professional.’ I don’t know who it is, either. All I know is her first name is—”
“Samantha?” Brett supplied, his shoulders slumping and eyebrows raising.
“Uh, yeah. How did you know? Oh God, I haven’t gone and insulted one of your friends or something, have I? I didn’t mean to, honestly. It’s just she’s being a bit difficult…”
“Natasha, don’t panic. She’s no friend of mine. I’ve never even met the woman. Besides, if she was one of my friends, I’d be giving her a bollocking for being rude to one of my staff, wouldn’t I? Anyway, if it’s the Samantha I think it is, then she’s being very difficult, and you’re being overly polite. Andrew warned me about her.”
“He did?”
“Yeah. Bloody typical that she’d phone while he’s away. The man barely ever takes a holiday, and now he finally has, his most awkward client is on the blower. He damn well owes me one after this.”
“If she’s a regular client, how come I’ve never spoken to her before?”
Shrugging, Brett replied, “Dunno. Maybe she’s got Andrew’s mobile number or something?”
Natasha gasped. “But he never gives out his mobile number to clients. He’s very strict about that—always asks us to take a message and if it’s urgent, pass it on to him directly.”
“Yeah…” Brett scratched his head. “He didn’t say much about her, beyond that she can be difficult. Honestly, I was a bit distracted when he mentioned it so I wasn’t paying a great deal of attention. I wish I’d asked more questions now, but I never thought I’d have the misfortune of having to deal with her.”
“You haven’t, yet.” Natasha raised her eyebrows and jerked her chin towards the phone on his desk.
“Good point.” He gave a wan smile. “Suppose I’d better find out what she wants, hadn’t I? If she’s special enough to have Andrew’s precious mobile phone number, then I ought to keep her sweet.”
“Probably wise.” Natasha left the room, closing the door behind her, but not before Brett spotted the slight smile on her face. Relieved to pass on the bitchy customer to him, no doubt.
Taking a deep breath, he picked up the phone. “Hello, Brett Coulson speaking. How can I help?”
“Oh,” came the reply, “Brett. Ah, yes. You’re the other vet, aren’t you? Jolly good. Know what you’re talking about, do you?” The woman’s accent was posh, southern. Like she’d been to a finishing school or something.
Gritting his teeth, Brett then pasted a smile on his face, hoping it would be apparent in his tone, despite the daggers he was actually staring at her through the handset. “Yes, I most certainly do.” Should fucking do, after five years of training and the same again working in the profession. I’m not on bloody work experience here.
“But you sound so young.”
Glad she couldn’t see him, Brett rolled his eyes. Her problem obviously wasn’t an emergency, the way she was waffling on, time-wasting. “I’m almost twenty-nine, Mrs…”
“It’s Ms, actually. Samantha Hanson-Bishop here. So you’re still a baby then.”
“Is there something I can help you with, Ms Hanson-Bishop? Only I’ve a call to go out on in a few minutes.” He couldn’t help the emphasis he’d put on the Ms. It could be construed as sarcastic, but it was still a damn sight more polite than anything he really wanted to say. Would she just get to the point already?
“Yes, yes, of course. That’s why I’m telephoning. I just wanted to make sure I was speaking to someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Clearly your receptionist doesn’t know anything about animals, much less my thoroughbred horses.”
Ah, okay, that made things clearer. The stuck-up, posh bird ran a stable. Now the haughty attitude made sense—she was entitled, bored, and thought she was better than everyone else. Wanting to defend Natasha—who was, in fact, very knowledgeable about animals, it being part of her job and all—Brett had to bite his tongue. If the woman, however snobby and irritating, ran a stable of thoroughbreds, then she was no doubt bringing plenty of money into the practice. They were doing okay, but the loss of a big customer without a replacement wasn’t something they’d be able to sustain for very long. And word of mouth was very important in this game—he didn’t want her bad-mouthing him or the surgery.

5 Favourite things
1.      Movies. Especially sci-fi/fantasy, paranormal/supernatural, and comic-based movies. I also count those types of TV shows, ie Supernatural, Jessica Jones, Arrow etc.
2.      Books. Does that surprise you? Hehe
3.      Pets. I love my pets, and can’t wait to get more. We already have 1 dog, 2 cats and 3 snakes. We also want another dog, horses, chickens… we want a menagerie!
4.      Quiet times with my fiancĂ© and our daughter, or just one-on-one time with either of them. I don’t care if it’s at home or out. “Us time” is always magical.

5.      House planning. Sounds weird, I know. But I love looking at houses for sale, especially ones with floor plans, and imagining what furniture would go in it, themes, and yes, even making my own floorplans. I have considered doing interior decorating, and haven’t yet ruled out chasing that path.

She's one powerful Goddess, with acolytes she loves as children. They're her coven, and she will protect them however she can. She is Hecate. As she wills, So Mote It Be.

This inclusion tells the tale of a powerful coven in Salem. They face off against Bokors, demons and fellow witches. Will the power of their Goddess be enough to protect them as they fight to keep Salem safe? Will the women who lead them get the love they desire? Or will they burn in the fires that condemned their ancestors so many years ago?

Darkness surrounded her, smoke and the metallic scent of blood filled her nostrils. Panicked screams and bellows echoed around her as she fumbled about. She couldn’t tell which form she was in, human or stag, she was simply overwhelmed. Out of nowhere, fiery red eyes appeared in front of her. White fangs gnashed together in a sadistic grin. The figure came closer, allowing her to see it clearer. Wrinkled skin cracked and oozed as the blackened flesh moved. The foul apparition had been born of fire, she was sure, brought here to destroy and devour. Large, leathery wings sprouted from its back, the bony frames licked by flames that seemed to come from the creature itself. It was a nightmare summoned from the bowels of Hell, just one of many. If she didn’t stop it, they’ d consume the world, at the word of one scorned witch. She needed to get to the root of the problem, Hilana, before it was too late.
“Morgan!”
She opened her eyes at Caleb’s call, his face filling her field of vision. He pursed his lips and frowned, and it took her a moment to realize she must have fallen asleep and called out in a dream.
“Morgan, you were having a pretty bad nightmare, what happened?”
“It wasn’t just a dream; it was a foreshadowing.”
“That bad, huh?”  Caleb sat on the window seat next to her.
“I don’t know what Hilana will promise them, but the demons will devour the world for her. She’s beyond seeking simple revenge. She has been twisted by her own magic and foul attitude into something truly evil.”
Caleb whistled. “So it’s a good thing Junie returned while you were sleeping.”
Morgan sat upright. “What did she find out?”
“You’re right, she isn’t just after simple revenge. Junie was able to get close enough to the sigils to look them up in the books now she’s back. It’s not looking good. They’re cacodemon sigils. She thinks Hilana will trade them free reign to create havoc, as long as they first destroy everyone who has done her harm.”
Morgan’s throat constricted that the mention of cacodemons.  “She’s crazy.”
Caleb nodded. “That was Siobhan’s diagnosis as well.”
“When does Junie think Hilana will summon them?”
“At the full moon on Friday.”
“Damn. That doesn’t give us long. Any suggestions on preventing the summons to begin with?”

“You mean besides burning down the house with Hilana in it?”

Award winning, bestselling author Phoenix Johnson has always been intrigued by the written word. Even when she was a young girl, she usually had her nose stuck in at least one book, and her need to read would drive her to peruse the back of the same cereal box each morning at breakfast. Paranormal and fantasy captured her heart, with tales about dragons, magic, and fanciful creatures sweeping her away to a wonderful new world where she felt she truly belonged.
Phoenix Johnson has had her nose to the grindstone, working to make her name known. With only a few months left to the end of her Bachelor of Arts Degree, she is eager for more time to focus purely on her writing.  Phoenix is extremely excited to see where her writing career takes her next.

Chapter One

“You know, if you stay like that long enough, one of the boys is going to think you’re one of the mail room owls.” Cynthia twirled her long black hair around her finger and smirked. She smoothed her hands down her sweater and snagged her tablet off the desk.
Merryn ruffled her feathers and transformed back to human form, a scowl on her lips. “Bitch. This isn’t Hogwarts.”
Cynthia shrugged, picking up her books. “I only speak the truth. Come on. Professor Jenkins doesn’t care if you transform twenty times. If you can’t do it in front of the class next Tuesday for the exam, you’re toast.”
“I know…” Merryn sighed. “Why didn’t I go to a college with a normal curriculum? What’s so bad about accounting? Or even a business class?”
A corner of Cynthia’s mouth twitched. “Um. Let’s see. You’re a witch, maybe? And why would you ever want to? Montelier is a good school. Hell, it’s the only school on the east coast. You should be happy.”
Merryn picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. “I just want a normal life. A job. You know…”
“Normal is boring. And no, you don’t. What about that weird class you’re taking? The one you talked about yesterday. The freaky medical one you said you actually liked?”
“Yeah,” Merryn grimaced. “Alchemy of forensic osteology.”
“That’s a mouthful.”
“I know. Oh, damn.”
“What?”
“I have to run by the lab and grab my notes. We’re studying one of the recent deaths in the shifter stalker case, and I was supposed to have a report in two days.”
“You have to go now? Why don’t you come with me to the bar first? I bet we can pick up a couple of guys and make a night of it.”
“Says you who never failed at anything in her whole undead life,” Merryn snorted. “No. I’m behind already. If I don’t get this paper turned in I’m toast.”
“Huh. I beg to differ. I can’t cast a spell for shit and you know it. I’m just taking this class for the credits.” She gave her a lopsided grin and waggled her eyebrows suggestively. “And the hot teacher.”
“You’re awful.”
“But it’s fun. It keeps me busy and, most importantly, out of Roark’s grand designs of vampire matchmaking.”
“Is he still doing that? How does a Master vampire have the time?”
Cynthia’s nose crinkled. “He never quits. It’s all for the good of the family. Blah, blah, blah. I’m trying to convince Mari to come back. It’s been a few months since the attack.”
Merryn paused. “Wait. Was she the girl that got mauled outside the Copper Kettle a while back?”
“Yup, and now that she’s sort of dating Roark’s bestie, he’s fuming and has relaxed with pawning her off on pimply faced assholes like Jared.”
Merryn paused, a frown spreading across her face. “You mean that guy from Vampire Studies?”
“Unfortunately,” Cynthia replied, her lips curling up into a wicked smile. “Word has it she left him tied up with a pair of her panties in the garden.”
“Oh my God. I wish I could have seen that.”
“You’d have to actually go someplace that isn’t work or school.”
“Did you go?”
“I did.”
“Did you see anything?”
“No. I was too busy talking with the girls and missed it. But, damn, that would have been funny.”
“Yeah.” Merryn followed Cynthia into the hall. The last class of the day was over almost an hour ago and the hallways were a ghost town. Most students would be in Salem proper, getting ready for the Halloween festivities. Except her.
“Are you going down to the Psychic Fair?”
“Naw. I thought I’d head over to the library before I go to Broomstix. Well, after I grab my notes anyway.”
“You have to work tonight?”
Merryn shook her head. “I wasn’t supposed to, but Bridget left me a message to drop by before I went home.”
Cynthia brightened. “Maybe she got in some of those cool new witch hats.”

“Leave it to a vampire to say that. I’ll tell her you’re in the market for one. See you later.”

Cecilia’s Five Favorites

Hey, y’all, I’m so excited to be here! I was told I needed to figure out five favorite things, so I decided to try and do something a little bit different than the usual. So, here we go:

Favorite meal of the day – lunch!
Perhaps as a child I was influenced by Weird Al Yankovic’s early classic “Girl Just Want to Have Lunch.” It’s the perfect meal of the day. Don’t feel like real food? Have breakfast, call it brunch, and claim to be all fancy on Instagram! Can’t decide whether you want to have caffeine or alcohol? No problem – have both! No one’s going to be judging you unless you’ve brought beer into McDonald’s. And hey, if you have brought beer into a fast food joint, I salute your determination to embrace the noncommittal nature of this meal, especially if you then order breakfast.

By the way, I really like breakfast, too, and I’m not above having a mimosa whenever I can.

Favorite weather – bring on autumn!
If you live in the Southeast U.S., you know it’s been a really hot summer, even for us. I have naturally curly hair, and it has its own ideal range for humidity separate from the rest of me. This summer has definitely tightened my curl to its limit. The funniest was after going for a long run in Florida on a recent vacation. Yes, my husband convinced me to go on a long run while on vacation. I’ve never seen my hair curl as tightly as it did that morning. If I’d been wearing a hat, it would have popped off. Ugh, that was miserable – blazing sun, humid as anything, and no breeze.

Oddly my favorite weather still involves a lot of moisture in the air. I love cool, cloudy days with a breeze and the occasional mist. It’s perfect for all of my favorite things – napping, writing, reading, napping, drinking warm or alcoholic beverages while watching the mist, napping, and sometimes running if I’m in the mood for it. I missed my geographical calling – I should’ve moved to the Pacific Northwest.

Favorite thing to procrastinate with – playing around with graphics.
I almost said Facebook, which is connected, but I’ve been trying to not let unnecessary negativity into my mental space. So, graphics! I think they relax me by allowing me to use a different part of my brain. I live in the world of words for both my careers, so it’s nice to get a break and do something different.

Why don’t you see more graphics from me? Well, I didn’t say I was good at them. I’ve just gotten a trial for Illustrator. Wish me luck. I may disappear down the Adobe rabbit hole and never emerge. Deadlines, what deadlines?

Favorite kind of pen – anything narrow and ball-point.
I thought I’d stick something writerly in here. I love the Pentel RSVP pens, specifically the narrowest ones. They’re great for writing and doodling, which I do during webinars and lectures but not client sessions. I can’t doodle during session – I use electronic health records, which makes it hard.

My husband asked me once if I write my novels during session while pretending to take notes. I told him no, but really, would I admit it if I did?

As for why ball point, I just can’t do the felt tip thing.

Favorite sport – sleeping.
As you’ve probably guessed by now, I love to sleep. If you don’t think sleeping is a competitive sport, you’ve never been at my house on a Sunday morning. No, I’m not inviting you for brunch, although I’m sure that would be lovely. I don’t typically watch sports, and if I’m going to compete, it’s going to be something I’m good at. I’m a reluctant runner but a champion sleeper.

And if you do show up for brunch on a random Sunday morning, I won’t make fun of you for being pretentious. Just don’t come over too early, and be sure to bring mimosa fixins. It’s hot out.

Former model and heartbreaker Kyra Ellison is accustomed to making trouble, not being on the receiving end. When she’s kicked out of her family’s Ozarks cabin where she's been taking refuge - okay, hiding - after a wicked ancient syndrome wrecked her old life, she's forced to go to Salem, Massachusetts. Yes, that Salem, where a murder, witches with secrets, and handsome billionaire make danger irresistible. Kyra finds she's not the only one with secrets and skeletons in her family closet, but some are more deadly than others. A confrontation with ancient danger and a new foe forces her to choose between the old life she's been craving and the new love that might make everything worth it in the end..

A moonbeam found its way through the blinds and speared me awake at around three o’clock. I rolled away from it, but my movement was echoed by a thud downstairs. I sat, all senses alert, and heard a scratching sound like boots scrabbling in sand.

I pulled the T-shirt I’d slept in over my head just before my hands curled into paws. My fingernails turned into claws, and the change came on from my extremities. It felt like I curled inward and folded into shapes no human body should endure. The fur itched as it pushed through pores I hadn’t had before, but I couldn’t control my paws enough to scratch it.

The final thing to change was my face, and that was the worst sensation, of someone taking my nose and pulling so hard it brought my skull with it.

Then the pain stopped, and a sense of strength, grace, and deadliness unfurled like a flag in my middle and filled me with purpose. To my wolf eyes, the room seemed awash in daylight—not moonlight—and my lips curled.

There was an intruder in my house, and I wanted to tear him or her apart.

No tearing apart, I reminded myself. Not unless I want a visit from that nice policeman later.

I jumped off the bed with as little noise as possible and slunk into the hallway and down the stairs. My fur was the same color as my hair—almost black—so I knew I would blend into the shadows.

Whereas the sulfurous smell had dissipated to my human nose, it was still very strong and present to my wolf nose. But that wasn’t what made me stop, all fur on end, when I turned toward the front hall. The sand I had stepped in glowed an opalescent blue, and I saw it was in a circle shape about three feet in diameter. I could see the panes of the front door through the ghostly figure that struggled in the middle of it.

My wolf brain, eminently practical, noted that I couldn’t do anything about a ghost because it wasn’t solid enough to be afraid of me, so I should just turn around and go back to bed.

But then I heard my name.

My ears perked up, and I moved closer, sticking to the darker patches. Why was the ghost calling my name? Was it a deceased family member visiting for the Festival of the Dead? What was I supposed to do about it?

“Kyra, where are you? I’m trapped. I just want to talk to you.”

The ghost pushed against some sort of invisible barrier. When I got close enough to make out its features, I gasped, which came out as a canine huff.

Jared Steel was the ghost trapped in the circle.

“What are you doing here? Are you dead?” I didn’t know if he would hear my mental voice, but he spun around.

“Where are you? I can’t see you.”

“I’m right here. It’s nighttime. Why are you here in my parents’ house? Are you dead?”

“No, I don’t think so. I think I’m dreaming.” He looked at his hands and grew more solid. I moved out of the shadows to sit in front of him, and he tried to back up, but he bounced against the back of the circle.

“Kyra, wherever you are, go! There’s a wolf.”

He looked so bewildered I wasn’t sure whether to laugh at him or comfort him. I still didn’t know whether he was dead, but I suspected not. If some wolves could spirit-walk, then I supposed some humans could, too.

I did want to know who had made a binding circle in my foyer, but I guessed it wasn’t my confused astral projection house guest.

And if he was projecting while he was asleep, I could have some fun. My instincts told me he didn’t realize he had this ability and would just write all this off to a strange dream in the morning.

As he came more into view, his attire resolved itself into shorts and a tight-fitting T-shirt that hugged the muscles of his upper arms, shoulders, and chest. Dark hair showed above the rim of the v-neck collar, and I licked my lips at the sight of his lightly fuzzed and nicely shaped legs.

Yes, Jared Steel was quite nice out of his work clothes, and I found myself disappointed that he didn’t sleep naked.

Cecilia Dominic wrote her first story when she was two years old and has always had a much more interesting life inside her head than outside of it. She became a clinical psychologist because she's fascinated by people and their stories, but she couldn't stop writing fiction. The first draft of her dissertation, while not fiction, was still criticized by her major professor for being written in too entertaining a style. She made it through graduate school and got her PhD, started her own practice, and by day, she helps people cure their insomnia without using medication. By night, she blogs about wine and writes fiction she hopes will keep her readers turning the pages all night. Yes, she recognizes the conflict of interest between her two careers, so she writes and blogs under a pen name. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia with one husband and two cats, which, she's been told, is a good number of each. Her debut novel The Mountain's Shadow, an urban fantasy featuring werewolves with a scientific twist, was released in October 2013, the sequel Long Shadows will be out in March 2014, and she has been offered a contract by Samhain for the third in the series, Blood's Shadow. She also writes young adult fiction and won the 2011 Mystery Times Ten contest through Buddhapuss Ink with her YA fantasy mystery The Coral Temple.
