Book Description:

Flick Lindenwood, fresh from college, has returned home to the suburban haven of Green Valley, back to society…and the source of her heartbreak. Four years ago Elodie Hamilton savagely broke her heart, and Flick has no intention of letting her pretty ex get back under her skin. As far as she’s concerned, she and Elodie never happened.

But Elodie has other ideas.

Afraid to come out, Elodie chose to destroy her relationship with Flick rather than let her family know who she was. But now she wants to right the wrong she did—if she can only find the nerve, and if she can convince Flick to see past the pain she caused.

Excerpt:
The door of the Dodge Charger slammed behind her as Flick Lindenwood walked up the driveway to the house, dragging her wheeled suitcase after her.
It was exactly as she remembered. Pansies and tulips bloomed in the borders of the front garden, edging an elegantly mown lawn. In front of her stood the house, two stories rising behind a large veranda, a curtain twitching in one of the windows.
Before she reached the front door, it opened to reveal her mother. Flick let the handle of the case go and stepped forward to meet her in a hug.
“Felicity, darling! We’ve been waiting all morning.”
“Sorry, Mom. Traffic.”
Her mother stepped back, smiling, and looked her up and down. Flick bore the scrutiny patiently. She had a new haircut and outfit which had yet to receive maternal approval.
Apparently they did. Her mother pulled her back in for another hug. “You look lovely, darling. Oh, it’s so good to see you. I’ve got so many things to tell you—I’ve been organizing your graduation party, and then there’s the Saulters’ barbecue tomorrow, and—”
“All right, all right!” Flick broke in, laughing. “Let me get in first!”
She followed her mother into the entrance hall, noticing that the lounge door was open on her left. Through the doorway she could see her graduation photograph taking pride of place on the marble mantelpiece, blocking off part of the gold-edged mirror.
“Don’t be long,” Mrs. Lindenwood added airily as Flick made her way toward the staircase. “I want to hear everything. Have you met any nice girls?”

Review:

This was a great short read. The story was well rounded, the interaction between the characters smacking of joy and heartbreak as their relationship went from down to up again. The sex scenes were smoking hot and I couldn't put it down.

I do wish we had seen Elodie's POV as all of the story was from Flick's. And the way the two girls broke up-wow. Flick had a good reason to be mad but the resolution at the end was a little too easy. I also wondered about Elodie being so afraid to come out if her sister was also a lesbian with the full support of her mother. Without Elodie's POV, it was hard to get a good read on her and the story was a little incomplete. In other words-more please! Great story-just wanted multiple POV like you get in many romance novels, so it pulls you deeper into what each character is feeling.

Synopsis

Screaming Down Splitsville takes place in an alternate 1950s where two groups of people with magical powers fight for dominance. Flip, a young lesbian, thinks her healing powers are completely useless. After her escape from a lab, she's been grounded to a safe base, and while everyone else is on important missions, she keeps the fridge stocked and fixes the plumbing. However, when a chance coincidence sends her on a solo rescue mission, Flip has a surprising reunion with a woman from her past.

Unable to speak after a botched cleft palate surgery, Emma-Rose grew up half-wild in the Southern backwoods- until strangers discovered her magical powers and imprisoned her in a laboratory of torture. Her one salvation was the woman in the next cell, Flip. Now Flip's returned, and according to her, they'll both make it to safety. But Emma's plans have failed so many times that she has no hope left to lose.

As the two women seek to evade their pursuers, their friendship rekindles, and they are forced to confront both enemies and insecurities.

Excerpt
Her eyes were strikingly, startlingly brown, as sharp as knives. She was dark-haired, tangle-curled, as skinny as a feral cat– and just as vulnerable.

Flip sat down hard, clapping both hands over her mouth to stifle a cry.

My Emma Rose, Flip thought. My girl in the next cell. No one else ever came for her. Had she not known she was here for all that time? Had she never escaped?

Slowly, she moved closer to the cage. Distrust flashed over Emma’s face, and she startled backwards. Don’t touch me, her instinctive sneer said. Yet for all her primal bravery, her thin shoulders trembled with fear more than cold. Flip dared to spread her awareness. Bruises speckling her skin, old wounds improperly stitched, intestines that knotted up for lack of food; a body that was digging into its deepest resources, and had been for some time. Emma’s chest rose and fell, as if she expected at any moment to fight for her life.

“Easy now,” Flip whispered. She raised her hands, splayed her fingers: I am holding no weapon. She took one step forward, then another. Knelt down, so close that Emma could have raked her nails across her face. Those eyes, brown as a tiger’s, stared solemnly back.

Consciously Flip slowed and deepened the rhythms of her body. She sent a wave of power towards Emma, soothing and comforting. “You remember me, I know you do. If you can still hear me, try to breathe with me, be with me. I came back.”

Stitches that had been ripped open by struggling closed neatly together. Bruises faded in seconds. And fierce tightness began to unwind from bony, pale limbs as the iron shackles of fear released their hold.

Book Description:

Sugar's sweet, but sex tastes better…

Kit Cheever is more than eager to welcome her new co-worker, Sidney Campbell, to Tish’s Riches, the best chocolate shop in Virginia. While the long days on the job hardly exhaust them for long nights of play, Sidney hopes for more in their relationship than candy-coated orgasms. Is dinner out too much to ask?

Kit would oblige, but she likes her privacy. The people of Dareville don’t need to know she and Sidney are anything more than co-workers. Why be “out” when it’s so much hotter and safer indoors?

Kit won’t even hold her hand in public, which upsets Sidney. She’s not asking Kit to march in a parade, just to acknowledge her feelings to the people she loves. What will it take to get Kit out of the closet and into Sidney’s heart?

Excerpt:
“Nice getup,” Kit said, and twirled her finger downward to guide Sidney to move away. “I have to see the shoes.”

Sidney laughed and offered the full model strut. She whirled around and sashayed along the bar a few steps, wiggling her slim hips, then returned with an exaggerated en pointe of one high-top sneaker, which was actually designed to look like a red Uno playing card.

“How come they don’t match?” Couldn’t be too difficult to find checkerboard-patterned shoes.

“The shoes that go with this outfit are worn out. I haven’t had time to make another pair.”

“Really? You don’t buy these?” Kit asked. Baking, sewing…this girl was a one-woman craft bazaar.

Sidney smiled. “What can I say? I’m good with a glue gun and a pastry bag, so long as I don’t get them mixed up.”

“Cool. Uh, what brings you here?” Did Sidney know this was a lesbian bar? The dĂ©cor didn’t outright advertise it—no rainbow bunting or pink triangle beer coasters. Yeah, framed posters of semi-nude women hung on the walls, but Kit saw those at other places.

“I heard this was the best place to meet women in town. Rather, close to town. We’re kind of in between Dareville and the beach, huh?”

“Yeah. We were thinking of calling it West Vagina.”

Sidney snorted up a sip of her drink. “You have to warn me when you make a joke like that.” She waved over the bartender for some napkins.

She attracted many an appreciative stare from other patrons, too, leaving Kit to think of the right words to get Sidney to a more secluded place to chat.

Luckily, though, Sidney shared her idea. “This music is so damn loud, how do you stand it?” she called out. “Wanna sit out on the patio?”

Kit nodded, and a minute later they found two Adirondack chairs on the concrete, screened-in patio that abutted the alleyway behind the club. Kit had heard, when the building had housed an Italian restaurant, this area served as a smoking lounge for the wait staff. Nobody lit up here now due to new laws, but the folks at the Den tried their best to make the patio look pretty. Fake palms trees wrapped with white twinkle lights adorned each corner, and standing space heaters kept the area comfortable. Though no door separated them from the club interior, Kit noticed that the distance did mute the music’s volume to a low, steady boom.

“What were you drinking? Refill’s on me,” Sidney offered, and flagged down a server making the round to others lounging on the patio.

“You don’t have to do that, I’m good.”

Sidney smirked away Kit’s reluctance. “Please. I’m a working woman now. I can afford it,” she said with a wink. Kit couldn’t argue with that.

“I usually get the Key Lime Pie martini. It’s their signature drink.”

“Ooh, that sounds good. Two, please,” Sidney told the waitress, and Kit watched the silent exchange between them that followed. Well, she counted the seconds the waitress lingered, shuffling backward with her eye on Sidney, before finally retreating to the bar to place their orders. Petite blonde with Eighties fetish proved tonight’s favorite flavor, and Sidney no doubt tempted many an appetite. Kit placed a hand on her growling stomach.

Sidney crossed her legs and turned in her seat, squeezing her arms close to her body as though to preserve warmth. “How does a key lime drink become the specialty of the house here? Rather unusual choice.”

“Not really. The person who owns the Den is from South Florida. She used to run a lesbian bar down there. I guess they’re a dime a dozen, so she came up here to find a captive audience. Before that she taught English at some college, so that’s where the Woolf came from.” Kit crooked her head toward a poster of Virginia Woolf’s profile on the brick wall. Several artistic renditions of the famed author decorated the establishment, in places where one didn’t find the semi-nudes.

“I would love to have had a place like this in Wyoming to go to.”

“Yeah?” Images of gorgeous women in tight blue jeans, bouncing in saddles as the horses they straddled galloped in some wide prairie, filled Kit’s mind. One rarely ran into country girls in town, and suddenly Kit pictured Sidney in a Stetson the color of her geektastic shoes.

Sidney in a cowgirl hat, stripped down to a Rubik-colored thong, straddled over her hips and bucking with one hand in the air… yee-haw.

Review:

I love everything Leigh Ellwood writes. She has a way with words that takes you places, whether it is a bakery truck in the middle of a tourist packed event or a lesbian club. This book was full of power packed writing with characters you come to care for. Kit is a girl who is struggling with coming out to the people in her life and frankly, herself. It's different sitting at a lesbian bar when no one in your circle realizes your true self-until the new girl at work comes along and upsets the apple cart in more ways than one. Now Kit has to make some difficult choices and no matter what she chooses, life isn't going to be the same...

This particular book has an instant love/attraction dynamic where the characters go off and start a sexual relationship almost immediately. After Kit's hesitation at work where Sidney was concerned, this seemed a bit soon for me. I wanted the romance between them to create some sexual tension between the industrial size mixer and the macaroons. That said, this is still a fun romp if you like your sex right up front and the relationship later on. Just bring me one of those key lime drinks please. That sounds like something right up my alley...

Every Waking Hour: Guest Post by Paisley Smith

A Hot Mess by Paisley Smith

I went out on a limb with the woefully tortured alpha-heroine of my historical lesbian romance, Every Waking Hour. And while Grayson Garland’s brand of conflict might not be every reader’s cup of tea (or shot of bourbon in Gray’s case) her story was important for me to tell on myriad levels.
The obvious: Almost every family has a member with substance abuse issues. Some of the greatest characters in literature and movies are addicts – Sherlock Holmes, Doc Holiday, Arthur, Martha from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
The not so obvious: Addicts are complex characters with almost impossible obstacles to overcome in order to accept others into their lives. On the surface, addicts can be the life of the party. They’re supremely enigmatic, and yet a dark demon fuels their motives.
In Every Waking Hour, Gray drinks to escape because of two different, but connected issues. The most evident is Gray’s grappling with being a lesbian in the 1950s. Gray doesn’t necessarily fight her desire to be intimate with the same sex, but she does realize she is poison to anyone unfortunate enough to care for her. After returning to Alabama to bury her father, she meets Della Boyd. In exploring her curiosity with Gray, (yes, there’s quite a bit of smoking hot girl on girl sex) Della loses her heart and soon learns the charismatic author harbors far deeper secrets than her sexuality.
Excerpt
Gray didn’t stop her ascent until she’d closed the distance between them, until her face was only inches away. Her gaze dropped to Della’s parted lips. A delicious chill washed over her, and her mouth went dry.
Della stopped smiling. Her entire being filled with anticipation and expectation. She knew Gray was going to kiss her. It was something that only fifteen minutes ago Della couldn’t allow herself to imagine, but now it was about to happen and she wanted it more than she’d wanted anything in her life.
Gray wet her lips with the tip of her tongue and then gingerly brushed her mouth across Della’s. She opened her lips to the softness, meeting the whiskey-flavored tongue that tested and then retreated. The kiss was so tender and yet so devastating.
A husky moan tore from Gray’s throat, and she deepened the kiss, cupping Della’s face in her hand, pressing her warm body close. The faint fragrance of Gray’s androgynous cologne wafted in the sultry night air.
Gray’s arm snaked around Della’s waist, drawing her impossibly close, crushing her dress against the hard thigh that pressed between her knees. Helpless, Della yielded to the incompatible softness of feminine lips that vied with powerful passion. She responded, meeting the invading tongue, tilting her head to give and receive more. She entwined her arms around Gray’s neck and held her head captive.
This was madness. It was fire and ice, and Della dissolved into the embrace. And merciful heavens, the way Gray held her. So tightly. So closely. As if they could become one.
Desire unfurled and snapped like a standard in the wind, leaving Della powerless to do anything but submit. Dampness trickled inside her panties, and she moved restlessly against the thigh pushing tight between her legs.
Gray groaned, and her arms tightened, her kiss ever deepening. Her tantalizingly chilled fingers slipped from Della’s cheek, downward to where they worked inside the bodice of her dress, inching possessively under the laced edge of her bra. Sweltering passion contrasted the cool touch, pooling between her legs, and when Gray cupped her breast and pinched her already hardened nipple, Della all but melted.
A little moan escaped her mouth as Gray’s lips moved to her neck, then to her ear, where she raked her teeth against the earring there, then finally back to Della’s lips again. Della wanted this moment to last forever. This fervid passion. This recklessness.
Heat rolled up her spine, and all the taboos and warning bells sounding in her head evaporated, leaving desperate physical need in its wake.
Without warning Gray’s fingers fell away. The kiss ended. Della searched her eyes, shocked by the bleak darkness in the deep blue pools.
Gray turned away and sank back down onto the steps. She took her drink in her hands and stared into it.
“Grayson?” Della asked softly as she cautiously sat. After that kiss she could scarcely think. “Grayson?” she asked again. “What’s wrong? Did I do something wrong?”
“I’m sorry,” Gray said without looking at her. “I shouldn’t have done that.”

"This is a powerful story, told through vivid characterization and dialogue, touching and sensual at the same time. Every Waking Hour is set in the mid-20th century South where such passions are considered scandalous, yet for Della and Grayson it is a love strong enough to survive all the harrowing obstacles."  Staff Pick, All Romance Ebooks
