Breathless Monday: 'Ailani and Fire on Ice

Author Interview:

1. How did you start writing erotic romance?
Hi Erzabet, and thank you for having me here. My sorry little tale is that in 2007 I submitted the first three chapters of a mystery novel to a writing contest. I won! The first prize was the professional critique by a literary agent, but after giving me glowing praise-including the fact that I had a unique premise and protagonist -  he said I would never get it published because the mystery genre is a closed shop.  He suggested that I write erotic romance until my ship came in (he actually used this clichĂ©) and after sulking for a couple of days, I got over that sucky review and looked into writing erotic romance.
I pitched Phantom Lover to a publisher and got a book contract the same day. BTW, that agent was wrong.  I sold that mystery novel. It was Wanted, book 1 in my Mingo McCloud Honolulu Mysteries series. There are six so far and I am working on book 7 now. It's one of my most popular series. So, never let criticism stop you. Take it all in, learn from it and move forward!
2. Plotter or pantster?
A mixture of both! I do let the characters control me, sigh...
3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
In the morning, a cup of coffee. In the afternoon, bottled water or tea.  The other two things are my cats. They always sit me.
4. Favorite food?
I love Asian foods. I love Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Hawaiian...heck...I love exotic foods!
5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
My newest release is with Breathless Press. 'Ailani is book 1 in my Last Warrior trilogy. It's fiction based on a little bit of fact. The last king of the Hawaiian island of Oahu had a fearsome band of warriors - a Hawaiian version of the knights of the round table. After breaking up with his lover, Lio, my main character discovers he had a past life as the last king's favorite warrior. I loved writing this book!
I love all my characters but I think my favorite is Kord, who becomes 'Ailani's lover. I don't want to blow the plotline so I will just say this. Not many men could handle falling in love with a guy whose past life from 200 years ago keeps interfering with the present. How would you handle it if you were in bed with your man and you're suddenly transported magically back to those times?
Kord is a gracious guy about it! I love him!

6. I write because I have to.
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?
Anyone looking for love, who is dealing with real life, with problems and anxieties, but is willing to take a chance on true love.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
To be honest, I love the scenes in 'Ailani. There's a table top sex scene I thought was killer! Also in my first book, Phantom Lover, I have my heroes Kimo and Lopaka making love on the edge of Kilauea Volcao as it's erupting. That was a hard scene to top!
9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
Just do it. Read, read, read. Read everything. And write. Don't show partials to ANYBODY because you will get negative critiques that may not be helpful. Write your book and try not to edit too much until it's done. If you get stuck, you've gone off the track somewhere. Leave it alone for a day or two and reread it. You'll find where you went wrong. Repack the snowball and keep going.
Most of all, believe in yourself and the power of story. Keep calm and story on!
10. What is next on your writerly horizon?
I mentioned above that I am working on book 7 of my Mingo McCloud series. It's called Hogtied and there's murder, marriage and mayhem for Mingo in this one. I am working on a new series with my frequent co-author, D.J. Manly. I am blessed. So much going on and I appreciate and value my career each and every day.

Synopsis:
After a bad breakup, Lio rents a cheap house with magical views. It seems the perfect solution, but the house has a haunted connection with an ancient statue. Once unearthed, it gives Lio the power of...THE LAST WARRIOR...
When Lio's lover cheats on him, he's forced to give up what he thought was the idyllic romance he's lived with Maks, including their stunning, scenic Waikiki apartment. He rents a cheap house with magical views on the other side of the island. So why is it so cheap?
He soon becomes haunted by dreams in which a fearsome yet sexy Hawaiian man begs him to rescue him. Lio is certain he's going nuts until one night in the midst of a tropical rainstorm he follows the man's urgings and digs a hole in a church graveyard. He finds a gigantic, ancient stone statue with scary eyes...that soon gives Lio the power of...THE LAST WARRIOR...

Excerpt:
We shared a slice of the pie I'd never tried before. It was like eating a giant orange Creamsicle. That's when I remembered why Hau'ula was familiar. I'd come here many, many years ago on a school excursion.

"Isn't there a great trail into the rainforest around here?" I asked him.
"Why, yes." He grinned at me.
I recalled quite clearly going with my class. We'd bought ice creams from a portable ice cream stand as we were leaving. Orange Creamsicles.
"Do you hike much?" I asked.
"Every chance I get."
"Wow, that's great."
"You like to hike?" he asked, pushing the last bite of pie toward me.
"Yeah, my ex hated it, though."
"I'm always up for a hike," he said. "Give me a shout some time."
Speaking of shouting, the volume rose considerably with some newcomers so we gave up our table. Outside, I inhaled a mouthful of sweet night air.
He was giving me so many mixed signals, or so I thought. Sometimes he reached out to me, then pulled his hand away. I was certain he was staring at my mouth in a hungry way. I sure as hell wanted him to kiss me. He smiled at me a lot. Maybe he was being kind, but I felt certain we were on a date. When he took me to his own home, I didn't think I was wrong. His beach cottage sat right on the reef, and I was stunned by his uninterrupted view of the ocean.
Kord's life seemed to be straight out of my childhood. Everything on the walls and sideboards was found art. He'd discovered gigantic shells, sea glass balls, bleached pieces of driftwood that almost looked like antlers. He'd even made a hammock out of an old fisherman's net.
He showed me his home office, which took up most of the space. He pointed to the garage. "That's where I build stuff."
I had a sense he didn't bring many people here. I almost felt glad I didn't see any chick stuff. His home spoke of a solitary existence.
"Take a seat." He pointed outside. I swung in one of the aged rocking chairs on the lanai as he brought me a beer. Longboard. My favorite.
"You had a recent breakup too," I said. "Isn't that what you told Marcella?"
"Sure. It never works out for me with women." He scowled.
"Why's that? You're a great guy. Handsome, hard-working—"
"Thanks. That's part of the problem. I love to work."
The words swayed between us like a coconut palm. "I have a hard time with women because...because..."
He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't want me to know he was bi. I sensed he didn't want to give me ideas. It was okay. I didn't need any. I was too busy licking my own wounds and couldn't have handled any confusion.
When he dropped me home and kissed me on the lips, I felt my spirit and my body reacting.
"Have a great night," he said, then watched as I let myself inside Dad's house.
As I closed and locked the door behind me, I felt something shifting. I couldn't explain it as I leaned with my back against the blue stained-glass mermaid and felt her coolness seep into my hot skin.
Aaaahhh...something had changed. Something good. I touched my lips. We'd had a great date. No, not a date. He was being kind.
So why did he kiss me?
We'd had a swell time. A gentle time. I hadn't had such a sweet evening with a man in a very long time. When I'd cleaned my teeth, I fell into bed. I could almost feel his dark hair on my face, his lips on mine. I tasted salty tears. Yeah...something was changing. I didn't know what.
I dreamed of fishermen's nets, mad laughter, and mud.
At around three o'clock in the morning, I awoke from a strange dream.
No. They were not coming back. I wouldn't allow them to come back. Not the dreams. Not those ones. I closed my ears to the voices whispering...
Remember...remember...
I worked very hard to forget. To think of nothing but the soft press of Kord's lips, wishing for more. So much more.

Author Interview:
1. How did you start writing erotic romance?
·         Erotic romance is really a new territory for me. I started writing erotic based on a submission call that I had to write for. The story was demanding to be told, and I had to go with it. Generally, I am a heat 1-3 romance writer and that is definitely my comfort zone. But, that first story made me grow as a writer and I couldn't be more grateful. Now, I don't blush anymore when I write erotic. LOL.
2. Plotter or pantster?
·         Can I say both? Let me explain. When I get an idea, I have a small notebook that I write a very general outline in. It's one page at most, broken into chapters, scenes, and only important events. Total, it may be 400 words for a 15k novella. Then, I start writing. During my writing process the story may change, and I go with it. Then, I bring it back to the ending. That's the best way I can answer that. However, I have written entire shorts from nothing but sitting and typing as well. Some of those shorts have been written and edited in a day, and accepted in less than 48 hours. So, for me, either way works.
3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
·         Coffee cup, noise cancelling headphones, and usually a printed copy of the submission requirements for the story I'm writing.
4. Favorite food?
·         Crab legs. But, when I can't get those, I'm an Alice Springs Chicken at Outback fan.
5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
·         The hero Marcus was whispering in my ear when I saw my first live hockey game. He had a story, a great story. You see, Marcus is a great athlete in a manly sport, and he's gay. We had to find out how the world would react to his coming out.
6. I write because ____...
·         I write because of characters like Marcus. They beg for someone to hear their side of the story and tell it to others. I do my best and we are usually satisfied with the results.
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?
·         Though this particular character doesn't appear in my newest release, I love to write about strong females. Females who know exactly what they want, how to survive, and how to love. These characters are great, because you know eventually something will happen that makes them see that they can't so it all alone and having a caring partner suddenly breaks them and they become better people.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
·         I wrote a short story the other day that has two females as the leads. Their encounter was probably the sexiest I had ever written. It wasn't just sex. There was a raw emotion underlying everything. That emotion drove the scene and the outcome was very sexy.
9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
·         There are so many publishers out there that are looking for erotica and romance. The field can be the easiest to break into. Just don't give up. Don't take a rejection personally. Open that rejected story, re-write, revise, have others beta read, and submit it somewhere else. Someone will want it. Just keep pushing.
10. What is next on your writerly horizon?
·         That short story I mentioned above with the two females, well I'm currently in the processes of editing it with a hired editor. I hired a cover artist, and I am well on my way to self-publishing. That's what's next. It's been an interesting learning experience.

Carlos and Casey

Author Interview Questions

1. How did you start writing erotic romance? It began with vivid fan fiction when I was about 12 years old. I wove myself into the lives of my favorite band back in the day (full disclosure? Fine, it was Hanson), and of course this included romance, relationship drama, and plenty of hilariously uninformed sex scenes.
2. Plotter or pantster? Pantser with a desperate wish to become a plotter.
3. What are three things you have on your writing desk? The book “Gotham Writer’s Workshop: Writing Fiction”, a sculpted wooden pre-Columbian couple that represents my partner and I, and like, fifty notebooks.
4. Favorite food? *blink* Um…does ‘anything Indian’ and ‘anything Mexican’ narrow it down? That’s the most specific I can get, probably. I love so much food!
5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you? “Carlos and Casey” is a short story looking at the awkwardness of time. They are ex-lovers meeting for the first time after four years and neither really knows if the spark is there. It’s told from Casey’s point of view, and as a woman, she really spoke to me because I’ve been in plenty of those socially awkward situations where you have a history with someone, but you try to pretend like you don’t. It just becomes the elephant in the room. And the elephant can either go to sleep real quietly and you forget he’s there, or he goes storming around demanding everyone’s attention.
6. I write because ____... it is my coping mechanism for life; if I didn’t do it, I would be a very jittery, bursting type of person.
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about? I love writing about women who are so independent they can barely let themselves fall in love. Or rather, it happens without their consent, and then they spend the novel trying to understand how this could have happened.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote? I think it’s in my current work in progress. There is a very unexpected shower encounter between the leads, and it turns into some really fun, slippery, and tender moments.
9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field? Write until your fingers bleed, and read until your eyes bleed. Seriously. Do so much that you think you can’t do anymore, and then do more.
10. What is next on your writerly horizon? I’m finishing up my third novel, which is a romantic suspense involving a baby bounty hunter, a freak snowstorm, and two very loner leads; then it’s on to tackling the fourth novel, which may or may not have a future sci-fi setting, some mafia involvement, and a very long and sad separation between a married couple.

Ember Leigh has been writing erotic romance novels since she was far too young.  A native of northern Ohio, she currently resides in South America with her Argentinean partner, a detail she uses to justify her Bachelor's degree in Latin American Literature. Casey hasn't seen Carlos in four years, but a business trip brings the ex-lovers together, making them question whether the spark is still really there.
Blurb: Recently divorced, Casey has been longing for a man's touch. So when business brings her back to Carlos, the one that got away, it has to be fate. The four years apart have only done him better, and all she can think about is having his arms, and body, wrapped around hers. But Carlos is not the same man he was four years ago, and Casey too is feeling the weight of too much time gone by. Can Casey help reignite his fire or has time left them behind?

EXCERPT:
Her breath caught as she followed him up the staircase, tucked to the far side of the house. Carlos had always been fit enough, but it looked like he'd taken up some new form of exercise in the past four years. He was beefier, yet still lean. His ass moved round and tight in front of her as they climbed the stairs. At the landing, he gestured in front of them.
"This is my studio, but it's all yours for tonight."
It was a rec room that took up the whole second floor, and far more standard male than the ground floor alluded to. Movie posters, gaming systems, books scattered on floors and coffee tables, and, off to one side, the trumpet, asleep in a bed of sheet music. In the corner there was an overstuffed couch just about as wide as she was long – it would be great to sleep on, even better if he could bend her over that armrest and fuck her until dinner was ready.
She cleared her throat, deciding adult friendships could be fun, even after four questionable years. "I thought I'd be sharing a bed with you?" She tried to keep her tone playful as she sauntered toward the couch. She tossed him a smile and she caught a glimpse of him looking very stricken. Shit. Too far. Things are too different now. Abort!
Maybe too much time had passed in general. Maybe he was courting a girl and wanted to take it slow with her. Maybe he no longer found her attractive, four years becoming the dagger in the heart. Maybe he'd become celibate, or found her life too normal and boring. There was a whole list of reasons why she shouldn't make the first move.
"I was just joking," she said after a moment, rolling her eyes. "Come on, lighten up."
He exhaled slowly, looking down at the ground as his tongue found the corner of his mouth. "I know it was a joke, Case."
"In case you forgot, we used to share a bed." She looked at him pointedly, already horrified that the words were coming from her lips. What was the getting at? Who had authorized this dialogue?
He squeezed his eyes shut and laughed softly. "Oh, I remember."

Excerpt:

His hands started shaking, his breathing hitched, and his senses came to full alert. What's triggered my wolf? Cautious even though he didn't sense immediate danger, he began searching his surroundings. As his heart rate increased and a surge of sexual excitement hit him, he panicked. Had his time with Roxy made him so sick he equated danger with sex?
That can't be right. He always feared sex with Roxy. His body reacted, but his mind never got excited. Wary now, he sniffed the air and all at once, it hit him. She was nearby. His mate. The one who didn't know him, but he knew her wolf form. The sound of gentle laughter trickled in the wind, engorged with sadness to his ears. Melancholy he recognized, for he'd laughed like that. Laughed and smiled to hide the pain.
Now his heart restricted and plugged his ears as a roaring sound filled them. His wolf snarled within him and wanted to attack whatever caused such sadness in his mate. He walked faster, wanting a glimpse of the woman who was his mate. Still he couldn't see her. A group of people walked ahead of him nearly to the door. She must be among them. Worried he'd lose her, he started to run, and the fear from the group escalated. They moved inside quickly with only a man turning his face to him.
Lance slowed back to a walk and went in, his shoulders hunched, hands in pockets to appear unthreatening. The warehouse, jammed from one end to the other except around the center raised half-circle, echoed with voices, shouts, anger, jealousy, and fright. He tried to pinpoint the fright as it felt so misplaced. Every wolf in here should smell the fear and react, yet only he seemed concerned.
A loud clanging in his head nearly drove him to his knees. An old-fashioned clock with metal ticking noises had taken up residence in his eardrums and did not look to be leaving any time soon. He fisted his hands in his pockets and looked around. Was he the only one who could hear the minutes counting down?
The crowd around him receded, and the noise in his eardrums became his focus. He followed his instincts and moved slowly as if in a dream. A petite woman in a black overcoat stood in front of him. He reached out to touch her shoulder, but she turned and looked at him.
Her eyes widened in shock as did his. His hand, still suspended where he'd intended to touch her to get her attention, moved up to her bronze cheek, caressing softly. The deep brown eyes gazed at him in wonder before closing up to him. He saw it as clear as day even as he told himself he imagined it. She hadn't moved, hadn't flinched, but she had closed down—except for the one brilliant moment when their souls met.

Forbidden Fruit: Stories of Unwise Lesbian Desire

It's release day! Another wonderful anthology from Ladylit and I am pleased to be one of the contributing authors. What is desire and why are the most forbidden things the ones we want more than anything else? For the answer to that tantalizing question, an entire anthology of mega hot stories awaits...

<< TEMPORARY LOW LAUNCH PRICE! GET THESE 17 STORIES FOR $0.99 ONLY UNTIL 11 SEPTEMBER! >>

She's off limits but the attraction burns so bright it's impossible to resist.

This collection of seventeen stories charts the spectrum of unwise lesbian desire, gathering tales of women you should resist--but can't. In Jean Roberta's Shelter the bad girl's back from prison. An upper-class lady seduces her maid in Laila Blake's poignant story set in Regency England, while a Catholic nun is beguiled by a hooker in Lisabet Sarai's powerful The First Stone.

These women are cops, slave owners, doctors, Dommes, and horse thieves, and you'll find them at the pool, being seduced by older women, putting their job on the line for lust, or seducing the salt-and-pepper butch.

With stories from writers at the top of their game, including Sacchi Green, Erzabet Bishop, Beth Wylde, Harper Bliss, and Allison Wonderland, this collection is sure to thrill.

Excerpt from "Ascending Amelia" by Erzabet Bishop

“Do you want to play?” I look into your eyes trying to gauge if you are just
here on a lark, or if there is really a kinkster hiding under that schoolgirl mini
skirt. It has to be a costume. No one underage gets into this club. Ever. “We
won’t do anything you don’t want to do,” I say, hoping you will take me up on it.
You bite your lip and my body clenches.
“Okay,” you say, your breath erupting in a sigh. “Where do I go?”
I point to the door of the changing area. “Go in there and place your
items in a locker. There are instructions on the wall. Read them.”
You meet my eyes then turn away, heading for the door.
It doesn’t take you long to change out of your clothes and come back to
me, naked and trembling. High breasts tipped with rosy nipples grace your form,
firmly tapering down a taut stomach into a woman’s hips. Your neatly shaved
mound makes my fingers ache to touch you.

Excerpt:

Excerpt from “The Skilled Technician” by Kate Maxwell, part of the anthology The Sexy Librarian’s Big Book of Erotica edited by Rose Caraway

Moments later they were both inside her car, she in the passenger seat while he drove. There was something indescribably magnetic about him, and she sat there silently drinking in his masculine presence.
She wanted him.
No, she had to have him.
She wanted to rip into his shirt and run her hands over his
bare chest, push him down in the seat, then unzip his pants and play with his cock. Numerous glances at his crotch indicated there was something very nice hidden within, but these glances only served to fuel her curiosity. What would he do if she leaned over and reached into his pants for a nice feel of what he had? Would he be offended? Frightened? Disgusted? Or would it turn him on and drive him into the same wild frenzy to which she was rapidly escalating?
He drove her car down the service road that wound back behind the mall while she gazed at every part of his body. His manly scent filled the interior of her car and intoxicated her as the fantasies played out in her mind, one after another. She visualized taking charge of him and mounting his cock like a ravenous whore, thrusting her hips back and forth on top of him as his manly hands rubbed all over her body.
There was a nearly deserted side road coming up ahead, and she mentally debated whether or not she should ask him to turn down it. Almost too late, she gestured left and said, “Turn down there.” With lightning fast reflexes he immediately did so.
Once they drove several yards down the wooded road, she asked him to stop the car. He glanced at her in a combined expression of confusion and curiosity, but he did exactly as she asked. As he moved the gearshift into park, Laura took particular note of the movement of his arm muscles that ran from his wrist to his elbow, and when he turned to face her she ran the fingers of her left hand up along his forearm, tracing those very same muscle lines.

Breathless Monday: Some Mistakes

Author Interview
1. How did you start writing erotic romance?
I was writing romance, and sex happened.
No, seriously, that's what happened the first time. I had an affectionate cuddling scene going, then they were kissing, then hands started roaming, and I suddenly had a sex scene and wasn't sure what to do with it. I ended up deleting it, actually, but the seed was sown (so to speak!) and after that some of my books turned out erotic romance and some just romance.
I've always liked romance as a writer (bores me to death as a reader, ironically) and it was a fairly simple progression for me. That said, I don't write out-and-out erotica because if there's no good story, I'm not interested on any level.

2. Plotter or pantster?
I still 'pants' the sex element most of the time - Some Mistakes was always going to be an erotic romance because that was such a huge part of the story, but literally every other manuscript with sex in it wasn't planned as either sweet romance or erotic romance. I plan the romance part, and if the sex comes naturally, then so be it. One of my current works-in-progress actually turned out quite filthy in the end!
I plot quite loosely. I like to think I know what each chapter will contain - especially if there's particular scenes I want in them - but the end result has often wandered off a fair bit. If I have no plan at all, the momentum fizzles out and the idea ends up in the ever-growing pile of 'stuff I'll do one day.

3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
Post-it notes. I cover the wall opposite my laptop in them. They're not always about writing, but some of them are. Right next to each other are 'Blog post - Alice Jones (!)' and 'Salzburg/Ljubljana???'  All my little reminders go up there, and the master-pad sits by the laptop ready for stray thoughts.
Secondly is a used ticket to Avenue Q in May. I don't know why it's there, but it is.
And thirdly are a couple of bright orange plastic tumblers, because once I'm settled in to have a good writing binge, I will not move. So drinks have to be here. There's a line of Pepsi bottles under the desk, and tumblers ready and waiting on top!

4. Favorite food?
Right now I'm having a serious craving for chicken tikka masala. You can tell I'm English!

5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
Some Mistakes is the story of mistakes - how some mistakes can completely destroy somebody's life, and how others can work out for the better if you just ride it out. The main character, Craig, had his life ripped apart ten years ago by someone else's careless mistake, and ever since he's pretty people-phobic in terms of having friendships and relationships. His sex-only, no-feelings-involved affair with Damian is just another mistake - but it's maybe the first one to go right in over a decade.
It's about Craig, but as I started writing it, Damian was the one who shouted louder. Craig's quite wary and watchful, but Damian's a little more carefree and wild. He's not what he seems - in some ways, he's a bigger mystery than Craig - and I felt like I was finding out about him as Craig did. He wasn't letting me in on any secrets, that's for damn sure!
The title - and Damian's approach to life - was very much inspired by a single line in a country song. The rest of the song didn't apply, and I don't even like country music, but Brad Paisley sang, 'Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.' That's pretty much Damian.

6. I write because ____...
I write because...I do. I can't actually pin it down or clarify it. I've been writing since I could hold a pencil, and making shit up for even longer. My mother used to call me the little liar in the family because I would make up total bullshit about my day at nursery school and come off completely convincingly. I won my first story competition when I was ten years old, and it was the first one I ever entered. I never had a moment of wanting to be a writer or an author - I just always took it for granted that whatever I did when I grew up, I'd be writing too. Luckily, I eventually went professional with it anyway!

7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?
Bastards.
Seriously.
Absolute, utter bastards. Not even evil bastards, necessarily, but characters who just don't give a shit. They can be fun and entertaining side characters - best friends who cameo with one-liner jokes every now and then - or they can be huge villainous gits swanning in to mess things up. I grew up on Stargate and loved Jack O'Neill for his bastard tendencies. Voyager bored me until Seven of Nine came along because everyone was too nice. Even heroes have to have their crude or cruel or bastard-y moments for me to love them.

8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
Until last month, I would have told you the shower scene in Craig's flat in Some Mistakes (now I'm not giving that one away for free, what do you take me for?!) but...
But recently I wrote a manuscript called Thicker Than Bone. And it wasn't intentionally erotic, but then one of the main characters turned out to absolutely love sucking cock. It was his thing. He was an honest-to-god cocksucker, and this blowjob scene just came out of nowhere. And it was easily the hottest blowjob I have ever written.
So yeah. Stay tuned for that one.

9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
Never, ever, ever use the word 'turgid' to describe a penis. Ever. It's wrong. Just don't.
There's loads of advice all over the shop for new authors, but specifically for erotica and erotic romance: sex is not romance. It sounds obvious, right? Apparently it's not because I see this way too much. You can't replace romance with sex and say it's love - and believe me, I have tried this.

Basically, if I see two people having loads of really hot sex all over the place, I will believe they are in lust and I may even believe they have passion. I will not believe they are in love. If you want me to believe that, you have to put in some affection. Some dates, some hand-holding, some kissing, some interaction that doesn't lead to shagging. There's a sad lack of it in favour of rampant sex everywhere, and if you want to be convincing in saying they're in love, then you have to provide the evidence - and sex isn't it.
(And never use the word 'bulbous' either. It might well be, but it's not sexy.)

10. What is next on your writerly horizon?
I currently have one young adult novel - Private - seeking a home, about coming out in a conservative military family. The Kershaws are easily the most fun and incredibly British family unit I have ever written, and I'm insanely proud of them.
I also recently finished an erotic romance, Thicker Than Bone. Would you save someone's life if you could? Anyone's? Really? This is about a frankly gorgeous little relationship between Yazid Al-Batari and Alasdair Barraclough, and the ever-present shadow of Alasdair's older brother, who...disapproves. Shall we say. That one's still being tidied up, but I will hopefully pitch it soon and find it a home too.
And my current work-in-progress is another young adult novel, In The Blood. I have no real explanation for this one yet, aside from an absolutely hilarious scene of two sixteen-year-old boys discovering you can blow up condoms like balloons and release them to fly across the room, farting the whole way. (Nope, totally didn't take that from real life...)
And after that - who knows! (But it's my birthday today, so the writerly horizon can wait for 24 hours.)

Author bio
Matthew J. Metzger is a British author living, working and drinking just outside of Bristol in the south-west of England. As much a character as those in his books, Matthew was created out of both the desire and the need to keep the writing world away from the day job and the family. Both Matthew and his author are as queer as they come, and more than a little mad.
Matthew's books, unsurprisingly then, address a wide range of issues both LGBT-specific and not. Depression, mental illness, domestic violence, abuse and illness have all featured in his works, both past and current, and probably will continue to do so.
Matthew can be contacted on his Facebook page, Twitter feed, or at his website. He's flaky and a bit sarcastic at times, but he doesn't bite. Generally.

Blurb:

Craig's life is defined by ugly mistakes. This 'arrangement' with sex-mad Damian is another - but maybe some mistakes aren't so bad after all...
Craig is not good at commitment. Relationships are to be avoided at all costs—but when Damian and their evolving coffee-order code fail to elicit anything more serious than Damian's last name, Craig begins to think that this is not a mistake at all, but an opportunity for guilt-free fun, without the prospect of breaking any hearts. Craig cannot afford to be found out, but it looks like Damian isn't interested in asking the right questions.
Then his mother dies. The mistake that ruined Craig's life in the first place is dragged kicking and screaming out of the past—and this casual arrangement with Damian begins to show its true colours.

Book excerpt:

The party is in full swing. P!nk is singing something about glasses. The DJ already looks high as a kite, but Craig suspects anyone who styles himself as "Timmy-G" and has violently pink dreadlocks has probably been permanently high for several years. He ignores the music, skirts around the dancers, and raises his hand at the bartender. "Lager," he shouts at her over the noise. There's no point specifying a label, because they only serve Foster's. It's shit, but it's cheap.
Lager—gnat's piss—in hand, he turns to scope out the room, leaning against the bar. It's vaguely sticky already; the floor is distinctly sticky, but then the floor always is. Craig scans the crowd. It's almost half nine, and that's after Damian usually turns up, so he's expectant. Likely he has found a dance partner already, because some people just reek of sex appeal without even trying, and Damian is definitely one of them.
It doesn't take long.
As the song changes, the dancers shift, and a neon light ricochets off that fair hair. Craig necks the rest of his glass and moves. He rolls off the bar, predatory, and advances on the shadowed dancer like something on the hunt. Damian is dancing with someone, not quite touching but almost there, and Craig hooks a finger into the top of Damian's tight jeans to turn him, cupping those narrow hips in both hands.
"Hello," Damian says – or, rather, mouths. The music is too loud, but Craig doesn't need to hear him. The way those lips lift at the left side of his face is enough, and then Damian drapes both arms oh-so-casually over Craig's shoulders and begins to sway idly against him. He's wearing those jeans that do something sinful to his arse, and Craig slides both hands into the back pockets. Damian just grins.
"Buy you a drink?" Craig asks against Damian's ear, audible only by the extreme proximity, and bites the lobe lightly when Damian squirms against his hands. Damian has a bony arse, all things considered, but he can move his hips better than any woman in the frankly sensual way he dances, fluid as water, and it more than makes up for it. He twists and flexes as he sways, and if Craig didn't already know his measurements, he'd be able to calculate them now.
Damian nods; Craig guides him to the bar, one hand still in a back pocket, and they lounge against it waiting for the bartender to be free. Damian slips a hand between Craig's shirt and jeans, and his fingers are hot.
"What are you doing here?" he asks, just about audible now they're off the dance floor itself. Craig smirks. Damian's asked this question every Friday night since the second time Craig picked him up, and Craig never gives the same answer.
"Keeping tabs," he says this time, and Damian grins. He's had a few drinks already, judging by the lax way the smile blossoms, and the way he tips his head like his tight, almost strict, control over his own body has slipped a little. It's enticing, and Craig pulls him in and nips at his neck. When there's no shivery wriggle, he bites harder, and Damian sighs. Yep. Not quite drunk yet, but definitely heading there.
"On what?" Damian murmurs and kisses Craig's stubble.
"On who else you play around with."
Damian laughs. There's no illusions here - no strings - and it's what Craig needs. There's no expectations with Damian. They don't go on dates, and they don't know each other outside of sex and a coffee code about sex. Damian doesn't come here to pick up Craig, specifically. And when one of them loses interest and this all stops, it won't matter. There'll be no hideous fallout.
That knowledge is freeing, and it's why Craig keeps a hand in Damian's back pocket— literally—and orders for him at the bar. He knows what Damian drinks by now. The nasty, paint-stripper variety of vodka that Edge of Pleasure serves. Sometimes with a mixer, sometimes straight. Craig always orders it mixed with something, because he hates the taste of vodka alone on Damian's tongue.
"You trying to get me drunk?" Damian asks when Craig slides two double vodka and Cokes along the top of the bar.
"Yeah."
"Why?" Damian asks, but knocks the first one back despite the question.
"You're easier to handle when you're smashed," Craig says honestly.
Damian smirks, knocking back the second before looping his arms around Craig's neck again and whispering in his ear. "You can't handle me drunk or sober."
"I can try."
"Mm, you could." Damian peels himself away. Craig watches him, watches who else watches him, and follows to cup those narrow hips and dance with him. He doesn't really know the music, and he's not much of a dancer, but it's easy enough to match Damian's rhythm and get his attention now and then with another bruise on his neck or another kiss. (Once the taste of the vodka dies down, many other kisses.)
Craig hooks a finger into the top of Damian's jeans and keeps him close. He kisses his neck and glowers over Damian's shoulder at another man who keeps hovering. Craig has plans for tonight, and the only unpredictable variable is when Damian has had enough of dancing.
Or rather, enough of dancing vertically.

Breathless Monday: Boss's Orders

Author Interview:
1. How did you start writing erotic romance? Well, I have always loved to read, but romance novels are dear to my heart. I have several that are my favorites. When I started creative writing at the age of eleven the stories were more Young Adult stories. The older I became the stories naturally progressed into romance and then erotica.
2. Plotter or pantster? Panster.
3. What are three things you have on your writing desk? My printer, a lamp, and a calendar.
4. Favorite food? Pork chops. Love them.
5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you? My new release is Boss's Orders, a flirt. The heroine, Lizzie is a strong personality in a small package. She is a spunky woman who knows what she wants.
6. I write because I feel compelled to reach the happy ending for my characters. There's a nagging feeling of something left unfinished that tends to bother me until I finish a story.
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about? Sarcastic, funny, and charming characters who make the story interesting.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote? In Boss's Orders the way Lizzie tries to make the bed with Brian in it is pretty spicy.
9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field? Be true to yourself and don't go past the lines of sensuality you are comfortable with.
10. What is next on your writerly horizon? I have a few unfinished projects that are waiting for me to get back to them. Next year should be interesting for me.
Thanks so much for hosting me today. I hope you check out Boss's Orders and chat with me about it.

Boss's Orders Excerpt:
"My panties are not in a twist." He insisted roughly. "I know we've had this argument before, but those guys were memorizing your ass in those too-tight jeans while you were bent over." Oh, so that was what got him so pissy. Interesting.
"So?" She wanted to laugh, but kept her face straight as she envisioned steam escaping his ears.
"You really don't mind being ogled by a bunch of sweaty movers?" He eyed her tight gray T-shirt once more.
"I'm flattered."
"Flattered! Are you so hard-up for male attention that you look for trouble like that?"
"Trouble? Seriously? They were harmless men." She scowled at him and got up to grab the bag of bedding she had purchased for the twin bed. "As for needing attention, every woman likes male attention." Irritation grew as he continued to glare at her while she made the bed. "And how dare you insult me about liking it, when every woman you've dated since I met you earns their living by sashaying their asses in front of men and cameras?" She snapped the top sheet with excess energy and began tucking it under at the foot. "Talk about a hypocrite, Brian baby."
"Eaves-dropping were you?" He actually grinned at her and she blew her hair out of her eyes. It had escaped her loose bun while she was beating the sheets into place.
"Why do you date women who are more concerned with their diets than with you? Oh, that's right! Because they have size two bodies and point two IQ's."
"You pay a lot of attention to my sex life, Schwep. Should I be worried about you becoming a stalker?" He laughed outright as she sputtered.
"You should be so lucky, Monroe."
