One Flesh by Annabeth Leong

One Flesh
By Annabeth Leong

Blurb:

Leticia and Rosalie are planning their wedding, wanting very much to make their special day one to remember, but Rosalie has something else weighing on her mind, one more thing she wants to make as special and as memorable as the ceremony itself—their wedding night. Rosalie wants to be with Leticia in a way that neither of them had ever been with anyone else. But finding something that would be a first time for both of them turns out to be harder than expected.

As it turns out, there is one thing Leticia has wanted to do but has never trusted anyone enough to allow herself to overcome the fear of it. And it's something that Rosalie has never done either.

The women discuss the idea of fisting as a means of connecting and forming an intimate bond with each other, one that they've never formed with anyone else. They've never loved or trusted anyone else they way the love and trust each other, and they are determined to find a way to make it work.

Excerpt:

"I'll call tomorrow to tell the church how many flowers we want to order," Leticia said, sighing and folding her notebook closed. No matter how many neat lists she made with her favorite purple pen, the sheer quantity of wedding-related details was overwhelming. "Can you call the caterer back, Rosalie? I still feel like they sneaked a charge in somewhere, but I can't get a straight answer out of them about it."

Her fiancée smiled indulgently. "Better yet. I'll go in person on my lunch break, and they won't know what hit them."

"Great." Leticia rubbed her temples and closed her eyes. She'd wanted to go to bed early, but another evening of wedding planning had made that completely impossible. She was excited to be marrying her one true love and all, but it was easy to lose track of that when she had fourteen phone calls to make and her mother demanded an e-mailed progress report every single night. "That's got to be enough for now."

Leticia stole a quick glance at Rosalie. She'd changed into a cute pair of pajamas when she got home from work, the childish pattern an odd contrast with her sophisticated coppery makeup. Leticia briefly fantasized about peeling the clothing away, revealing her lover's curves and smooth brown skin. Unfortunately, at that very same moment, she had to stifle a yawn. She was so damn sleepy. They would need to get to bed immediately if she was going to give Rosalie proper attention.

"We can't quit planning yet," Rosalie said. "We haven't discussed the most important thing, and it's coming up soon."

Leticia groaned. She flipped her notebook open again and paged through her color-coded, highlighted lists. "We've talked about everything I had listed for the day, and we even went over things that have deadlines coming up in the next few days. I don't see what we're—"

"The wedding night," Rosalie purred. "We haven't discussed that at all."

There was no mistaking the sparkle in her eyes. Leticia actually blushed, the way she had at Rosalie's makeup counter the first time they met, when the other woman's soft words of praise, roughened by the obvious desire in her voice, had gotten Leticia so hot and flushed it had been impossible to identify the correct shade of foundation for her skin tone. She'd been forced to come back later, not that she'd minded.

Now that she'd figured out what Rosalie was hinting at, Leticia played innocent. For all her lover's passion, her Catholic upbringing had left her with an adorable aversion to using direct language. Leticia loved to watch Rosalie get flustered while trying to explain her naughty desires. She batted her eyelashes and focused on her notes again. "We've reserved our hotel room the night of. We've got our plane tickets to Puerto Rico for the honeymoon a couple days after that. Everything appears to be in order."

"The wedding night," Rosalie said, apparently oblivious to Leticia's teasing. She rolled her hands through the air, one over the other, the gesture an invitation to take the word "night" and run with it. "The whole reason I wanted an afternoon wedding was so we could have plenty of time together. Afterward. In the hotel."

"You mean to take a good, long nap? I'm sure we'll be tired after dealing with all the guests, and coming down from pre-wedding nerves, too." Leticia couldn't resist continuing the act.

"Not a nap. But I am talking about what we might do in bed." Now Rosalie colored, a deep red undertone becoming visible beneath the screen of her makeup.

Leticia composed her face as much as she could manage and shrugged. "Oh, are you talking about sex?" A giggle threatened to slip through at Rosalie's incredulous, exasperated expression. "I don't know. I've read tons of articles about how people get so exhausted from all the things leading up to a wedding that they don't even really want to have sex by the time the day is done. We'll have plenty of time for that later in the honeymoon, won't we?"

"Don't even really want to have sex," Rosalie repeated slowly, as if the phrase was a math problem and she couldn't quite work it out. Her forehead wrinkled in utter puzzlement. A snort burst from Leticia. Realization dawned on Rosalie's face. She grabbed a tissue from the box on the table and tossed it at her. They'd both collapsed in giggles by the time the thin paper floated airily to the floor beside Leticia.

Leticia allowed the force of her laughter to pull her off the chair. She crawled the short space to Rosalie's chair and raised one brown foot to her lips. Leticia did enjoy a little foot worship now and then, but her current mood was far from reverent. Slowly, carefully, she slipped her mouth over Rosalie's polished big toe. She licked until Rosalie's breathing changed, confused between laughter and moaning. Then Leticia lifted off the toe and pressed her mouth to the sole of Rosalie's foot. She inhaled, gripped the ankle tightly, and blew a powerful raspberry.

Rosalie squealed and tried to get away. Leticia smiled but kept up the wet, ticklish vibrations. Rosalie's foot jerked in her hands. Leticia kept hold easily. She had plenty of practice restraining patients, which happened to have fun applications at home.

Rosalie writhed as she laughed. Leticia drew breath for another raspberry, but cut her eyes up as much as she dared. She didn't want to miss the sight of her lover, breasts bouncing under her shirt as her rib cage shook, hips rolling as she struggled to get away, face squeezed tight as if to ward off the unbearable sensation of being tickled. Effectively, this previewed Rosalie's orgasm. Warm arousal spread through Leticia's body as she forced Rosalie to stay in this state, and as she looked forward to seeing the real thing very soon.

Rosalie rained playful blows onto Leticia's head. "Why the hell am I marrying you?" It took forever for her to get the sentence out, as she had to gasp each word between shrieking laughs.

Leticia grinned and tugged at her lower legs. Her lover took the hint and rolled out of the chair to join her on the floor. Leticia wrapped her arms around Rosalie, who felt small and hot and curvy. She slipped one hand down to tickle between her ribs, rewarded by another delicious howl. Rosalie shoved at her chest. "You are evil, I swear."

"I'm sorry," Leticia said softly, managing to sound sincerely regretful. She kissed Rosalie's temples with great tenderness, until her lover relaxed and stopped wriggling. Leticia murmured more soothing words, rubbing Rosalie's back... then licked the side of her face.

Purr by Paisley Smith

Having been caught kissing a servant girl, Arabella suddenly finds herself shackled and bound for Katzenhalle Villa, where she expects to be forced into servitude. Instead, she discovers the mansion is home to other young women with Sapphic penchants-and good behavior is rewarded with kittenhood. All who reside at the villa dream of donning cat ears and tails and earning status as one of the mistress's "pets." There's one caveat. Romantic entanglements are strictly forbidden, and this poses a problem when Arabella catches the eye of a favored pet, Giselle. Risking discovery, the women indulge their mutual desire, heated looks escalating to thrilling touches with fingers, mouths...tongues. Until Arabella discovers things are not as purr-fect as they seem at Katzenhalle. While breaking the rules may see them punished, the treachery of falling in love may come at a fatal price.

Being sent to a serving house for wayward young women, Arabella has no idea what is really in store for her. I enjoyed this kittenish romp and found myself glued to the story immediately. What would it be like to be taken away if you had deviant tendencies? Arabella is finding out the hard way.

 The sexual tension and wondering who loved whom and where loyalties actually were placed kept me turning the pages. The characters were enchanting and as always, I love a good Paisley Smith book. The f/f elements were tastefully done and I loved the historical elements to this one.

Fun read!

Knights of the Boardroom 5: Hostile Takeover

Ben is the last unattached member of the five-man executive team of K&A Associates. The other four, all Masters, have found the submissive of their dreams. That’s fine. The sharp-edged lawyer knows he’s the most hardcore of all of them, with extreme tastes as a Master he satisfies physically through experienced club submissives. He doesn’t really need anything more than that.

Marcie has loved Ben since she was sixteen. He’s never behaved as anything more than a protective big brother, a family friend. But now she’s twenty three and starting her career as a corporate investigator. She may be a blood-and-bone deep submissive, but she won’t hesitate to use her aggressive talents to prove she’s meant to be his. With a Master as tough as Ben, she’ll have to take whatever measures are needed—even if her deepest desire isn’t a hostile takeover of his heart, but an unconditional surrender to it.

Ellora's Cave

Joey Hill knows how to write a book that distracts and pulls you into the story without even trying. Ben is a sadist and yes, my kinky friends, this book is not for the feint at heart. There is a 24/7 Master/slave relationship, anal sex, menage and much, much more. This 5th book in the board room series curled my toes and my hair and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. It is one of my favorite books this year for the sheer emotional impact. Awesome kinkified read. Fun! Sexy! Hot!

Bloodrose by Lisa Casian

1. How did you start writing erotic romance? I always loved reading romance. Something about strong, handsome men with women issues drew me in.  Who knew?  I wanted to write something I would love to read, something dark with romance, action, and mythological elements. Bloodrose has everything I love in a great story.

2. Plotter or pantster?
            I'm a bit of both. I usually start with the inciting incident. I plot around character, setting, and time period to get an overall snapshot of what I'm getting into. And then I jump. Each new development takes me to the next and on and on. I usually don't plot until after the first draft is written.

3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
            Computer, notebook, and pen. I need them to survive.

4. Favorite food?
Does chocolate count?

5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
Bloodrose is a dark fantasy novel set in 19th Century France. The story is about Bowen, who's a Shade Hunter and immortal. While hunting for his father, he finds friendship and love. But when his love is snatched from him he travels to Tartarus, breaking from the human world to get her back.
I love writing characters that are on the precipice of good and evil, characters that the reader isn't sure whether to cheer for or guard themselves against. In Bloodrose I found that character in the Shade. As the story progresses we learn more about him, his past, his flaws, and how he ties to the story. He was a great character to write because I never knew whose side he was on. I still don’t.
6. I write because it keeps me sane____...
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about? As I mentioned above, I love writing characters that are on the precipice of good and evil. They can go either way depending on the circumstances. My Jack Sparrow. I love exploring their humanity and morality by throwing them into impossible situations and figuring out what they would risk/sacrifice to get out. Save themselves or risk themselves for others? These type of characters keep me on my toes.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
Holy smokes…Bloodrose is my first adult romance novel. The first love scene would have to be the sexiest scene up to date. I plan on writing many, many more.

9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
Remember your readers. There's an element to writing romance. If you write romance, you should read romance. If you read romance, you'll totally understand what I mean.

10. What is next on your writerly horizon?
Although I didn't originally see Bloodrose as a series, I think another story is brewing. Actually, I have two more books brewing in the series.

Isabeau's life is haunted by nightmares her brother insists are a lie. Bowen's looking to revenge himself against his father while helping his friend. When they meet, all hell breaks loose against Isabeau. Can Bowen protect her? Is love ever the safe choice?

Newly convinced by a mentor to value human life, Bowen, a Shade Hunter, has withdrawn from aristocratic society in pursuit of the creature that made him into the evil that consumes him—his father. Bowen’s plans are thwarted when he assists a wealthy earl in finding his missing fiancĂ©. He’s drawn to the man’s beautiful sister, Isabeau. Bowen soon realizes that their fates are intertwined and she’s aroused a passion in him he’d never thought possible.
Isabeau Harington has always lived in fear. Surviving an attack that killed her parents, she always believed the monsters would return for her. When she meets Bowen, a mysterious, charismatic stranger who drives away those fears, she learns that the very man she’s falling in love with may be in league with the monsters hunting her. As a pawn in an Immortal’s scheme, Isabeau must make the ultimate decision—love or safety?

Book excerpt:

Bowen saw the beasts and knew instantly who had sent them. He clung to the leading beast and bit into its flesh, feeling the erotic sensation of its warm lifeblood. He instantly felt stronger, faster, and more alive. Flinging the beast towards the tree, he charged at the others when he saw Isabeau fall between them. His heart jolted and he allowed his rage to consume him, giving him speed and strength.
He broke through them, slamming one against a nearby tree and the other scurrying in fear. The rain ended and the sky sparked the first rays of the sun's light. Bowen looked down at her as she whispered his name and then she fell silent. He could still hear the beating of her heart, slow and rhythmic, alive.
Aware that he would not be able to protect her, he lifted her in his arms as gently as he could, and ran deeper into the thicket of trees towards the base of the mountain. The first hint of light cascaded through the canopy of trees. Isabeau tightened her grip around his neck, holding onto him as he sped deeper into the shadows, the light at his back. He was out of time. He would die in the sun and she would watch. Shadows marked his path until he reached the mountain and the cavernous terrain. He scrambled up the rocky incline and leapt into the solace of a darkened cave.
He squeezed her tighter, the words of the note in his mind. She'd known what he was, had seen the monster in him when he saved her from the white beast. And she still loved him. But she'd preferred Colin.
Settling her feet on the ground, he leaned against her, their foreheads touching, his breathing raspy. She wrapped her arms around his neck.
"You came back for me."
"It's what I live for. To save you." Sliding her hair behind her ear, he cupped her face in his hand and she leaned into him. Her face bruised, bleeding.
Isabeau deserves a normal life. Peace.
Adam's hollowed words echoed inside the chamber of his mind. "You are safe now," he said, his voice calm.
"What are you?" she asked.
He stiffened and pulled away from her, glancing at the puncture wounds on her neck. He shuddered. "You don't want to know," he said coldly.

Cold Sweat by J. S. Marlo

1. How did you start writing erotic / romance?

I started scribbling as a teenager for fun. I'd re-write the ending of a book or a movie to make it more romantic and show it to my friends, but then my writing went dormant for twenty years. There were plenty of ideas swirling into my brain, and no time to put them on paper. It wasn't until my kids left home in pursuit of their own adventures that I re-kindled my love affair with writing.  It's been a roller-coaster ride ever since, and I've been loving every second of it.

2. Plotter or pantster?

I plot the main storyline and characters, but the secondary plots and characters usually develop on their own. I particularly enjoy it when the characters manage to surprise.

3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?

A laptop, a bottle of water, and a pen. The pen is to play with while I think.

4. Favorite food?

Chocolate flavored with orange, grapefruit, or lavender. The darker the better.

5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?

My latest book is titled Cold Sweat (Heart & Endurance Series). The series revolves around high performance athletes. These young people are driven and passionate individuals whose spirits are not easily broken and whose choices are not always what one would expect. In Cold Sweat, Hope is a 17 year old deaf biathlon athlete who's training for the Olympics trial. When Hope dissapears without a trace from the snowy trails during a routine practice, her mother, an army colonel with one too many secrets to hide, enlists the help of a local sheriff, a man who once hurt her, to search for her only child.

As a mother of young people who used to jump on planes like others jump on buses to go to training camps all over the world, I can just imagine what went through the mind of Hope's mother when Hope's coach phoned her to say he lost her daughter. That would be my worse nightmare coming to life and I admire Hope's mother's courage and tenacity.

6. I write because ____...

Because I love it! Because the voices in my head won't stop talking?!?!

7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?

Smart, strong, and stubborn women in the prime of their lives. They have a past, they have secrets, they have scars, and they believe in love.

8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?

A love scene in a car wash. That was years ago, and it was in a cute little story that I'd written for my friends.

9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?

Write the kind of story you would love to read. Get to know your characters, the good and the bad. Pour your heart in your story. Be perseverant. And don't be afraid to send submissions.

10. What is next on your writerly horizon?

I currently have two more stories in progress. One is part of the "Heart & Endurance Series", the other is part of a new paranormal series tentatively titled "Digging through Time". It will be my first venture in the paranormal realm. It's spookily exciting!

Thanks for having me here today. It was fun!
Hugs,
J.S.

J.S. Marlo - Bio

J.S. Marlo spent her childhood in a small French Canadian town, reading and daydreaming stories. One day, she met her hero, a dashing young officer, and followed him back and forth across the country.
The "memorable" adventures she experienced with her young family fueled her imagination and kindled the dream of one day becoming a published author. It wasn't until after her three spirited children left the nest in pursuit of their own adventures, that J.S. finally gave writing a chance.
Her first two dozen stories were for her friends' eyes only. To her surprise and delight, they enjoyed them and rewarded her with their encouragement and support. J.S. kept writing, and learning, and writing…
She finally captured her dream with her first novel "Salvaged", and then carried on with her first series "Duty Bound": Unscripted–Book One, Unearthed–Book Two, and Untamed–Book Three. She's currently working on two new series: "Heart & Endurance" and "Digging through time". Cold Sweat of the Heart & Endurance Series is coming up in November 2013.
J.S. lives in northern Alberta with her wonderful hubby, and when she's not visiting her children and little granddoggie, she's writing in front of the fireplace.

Cold Sweat - Blurb
      Can they conquer the mountains and the past in time to save Hope?

***
       Seventeen-year-old Hope Craig is deaf and training hard to make the biathlon Olympic Team. But when is kidnapped from the groomed trails and taken into a remote cabin in the mountains, she must battle more than the elements to survive.

        On the hunt for her daughter's abductor, Colonel Amelia Matheson enlists the help of Richmond Morgan, a local Sheriff who once hurt her. To find Hope, Sheriff Morgan and Colonel Matheson must untangle a web of secrets, including their own.

        Using her wits and skills, Hope sets out to escape the mountains and save the man her mother had sent to rescue her—a man who is not who he appears to be.

Cold Sweat - Excerpt

Heavy breathing jerked her shoulders. She should have welcomed the potential lead in her daughter's case, not go into a frantic frenzy over the possibility. Stumped by her reaction, Rich stroked her back, relishing the warmth and the feel of her body.
"We can't rule out a connection, Amelia. The senator has refused to involve other agencies. Now that his daughter isn't the one at risk, he may stop cooperating altogether, especially if I recruit help from outside my office." Amelia's expertise and security clearance exceeded his. The military woman, as distressed as she might be, was still his best ally. "You cannot lose it, Amelia. I need your help to find Hope."
The fan of the fireplace switched off, and the humming ceased. An eerie silence enveloped the living room. Amelia stared at him, searching his face for...for something. Whatever she sought, he desperately wanted to give it to her.
"I haven't slept in days, Richmond. I'm hovering on the brink of insanity. Under no condition should I be trusted. In your place, I would tie me to a bed, drug me, and wake me up after you found my daughter."
As right as she might be, he trusted her—more than he trusted himself.
Taking advantage of her vulnerability, he scooped her in his arms. "Then let's get you some sleep."
Amidst a gasp of surprise, she clawed at his neck. "What do you think you're doing, Richmond Morgan?"
"Taking you into my bed." He carried her through the hallway, nearly dropping her. "Would you stop wriggling?"
"I am not sleeping with you. I am not that insane."
Of all the qualities she possessed, her indomitable spirit had been the most enduring. From the look in her eyes, that spirit was very much alive—and angry.
"Glad to know I already saved you from the brink of insanity." The timing couldn't have been worse, and yet, holding her had never felt so right. "By morning, you'll be rested and trustworthy."
"By morning, you'll be dead if you don't give up that plan."
Threats would not stop him. Not this time. "I was going to use my arms to keep you safe and my snoring to scare the night monsters away. If you prefer, I'll get the duct tape and the drugs."
As she glared, he bestowed a tender kiss on her parted lips. They quivered in response.

A Gift to Remember by Diane Thorne

1. How did you start writing erotic romance?
I started writing erotic romance as a challenge to myself. I’d been writing romance for a few years and wanted to venture into deeper water, see how far I could go. I found out the water was very warm and I took to it well.

2. Plotter or pantster?
I’m a mixture of both. I have the basic plot in my head. As I’m writing, I make up the details.

3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
iMac, post-it notes, and gum.

4. Favorite food?
Seafood. Yum.

5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
My latest release is called A Gift to Remember. It's about an assistant named Carol who is good friends with her boss and his wife. His big 40th birthday is coming and his wife has the perfect gift idea. She wants to make her husband's fantasy into reality. Carol is interested in the gift idea but has hesitations, especially since she works for her boss and is good friends with him and his wife.

I'd have to say Carol spoke to me the most and that's why I wrote from her point of view. It's an interesting dilemma and Carol has to work through it. Well, they all do in a way. Can she be friends and lovers with her boss and his wife? You'll have to read the story to find out.

6. I write because ____...
I enjoy it. I have a vivid imagination and I love sharing my stories with others.

7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?
I have several types of characters I enjoy writing about. The bad boy one is probably my favorite. But I also like kick ass type characters. Overall, I prefer writing from the male pov. It’s just more fun.

8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
Hmm… Wow, I've wrote quite a few and in various places. That's a difficult one to answer. Scenes in the shower or with food tend to be sexy and hot in my opinion. Elevators make for good scenes too.

9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
To new writers – write and read every day. Find a good critique partner or friend. Visit a conference and network with others. If you submit to places and get rejected, submit to others and don’t let rejection bring you down.

10. What is next on your writerly horizon?
I recently signed a contract for the sequel, Another Gift to Remember. The release will mostl likely be in 2014. I have another series that has several releases over the next few months as well. I’m not sure what I’ll start writing next. I’m leaning toward taking a break first.

Blurb:
Carol has spent the last five years working as an assistant for her boss, Thomas Barrett. She enjoys her job, and is a good friend to his wife, Lynn. Every year Lynn asks Carol for assistance in obtaining a gift idea for Thomas's birthday. With his big fortieth arriving in a week, Carol expects she'll need to snoop around the office for Lynn. To Carol's surprise, Lynn already has an idea for Thomas's present, and it's one he will never forget.

Lynn invites Carol to join her and Thomas in a mĂ©nage a trois. Although shocked, Carol considers such a rare opportunity to broaden her sexuality. But if she joins her boss and his wife in the bedroom, will Carol be able to continue a relationship with them? Moreover, can she keep her job working for Thomas?

Book excerpt:

Smiling, Lynn faced her husband. "Carol and I have agreed to express ourselves freely tonight. We want you to do the same. Anything is acceptable."
Thomas's brows shot up. "What does that mean?"
"It means we're not holding back, and neither should you," Carol said.
She turned to face Lynn and placed her hand on the side of Lynn's face. Leaning toward her, Carol brought Lynn's mouth to meet hers. Lynn kissed her back and slid her tongue between Carol's lips. Heat swirled within Carol while her loins ached for attention. She clenched her thighs. Gently and tenderly, Carol played with Lynn's tongue but she held control of the urges steadily rising within her. The night was young and she wanted to take plenty of time to play later. She pried her mouth from Lynn's, then they both smiled and looked at Thomas.
"If you want to kiss or touch Carol, then do it. I won't stop you, nor will I stop her," Lynn said. "If I want to kiss and touch Carol, I will."
He stared at them with wide eyes. "I can't believe what I'm hearing. I can't believe I just watched my wife kiss my assistant."
"That was nothing compared to our kiss earlier in the week," Carol said.
"You kissed before?"
"We did," Lynn said.
"Are you feeling okay, honey? Are you on any new medication?"
"I feel better than I have in a long time, Thomas. This is your birthday. I want you to enjoy it, and so should I."
He clasped his hands tight in front of his groin while he moved his legs together, then apart. "This is too strange."
"Don't be nervous, dear. Carol and I aren’t." Lynn shifted her gaze to Carol. "Are we?"
"I'm comfortable. Well, my thong is a bit wet, but I'll manage."
"See." Lynn smiled. "Now relax and enjoy your birthday. And don't hold back Thomas. I know you want to touch Carol."
Thomas leaned his head back against the seat and rubbed his eyes with his palms. "I'm dreaming. You put something in my wine and now I'm seeing things."
Carol sighed and looked at Lynn. "This could be a long night."
"He'll catch on. Give him some time."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
Drew Laramie was my brother’s lawyer. The first time I met him, he was wearing a tailored Italian suit by a designer I didn’t recognize. That alone was enough to pique my interest, sex starved as I was. I peeled back each layer in my mind: the soft wool, the thin silk, the stiff collar, and underneath? I wasn’t sure what I would find.
My only glimpses of a man’s body came from shadowed corners of the high school football field. Then it had been smooth, tanned skin heavily doused with tattoos. Then it had hurt.
Drew would be different.
The first day I’d met him, he’d faltered in his greeting, his hand half lifted to shake mine. His eyes had widened so slightly I wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t been staring—but I was. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I felt caught, like prey, unable to flee even as he came in for the kill.
Except he didn’t.
He didn’t hurt me; he didn’t hit on me. His initial surprise evened out into a bland smile and generic greeting. I suppose I could have expected it, considering Philip scared away every man who dared glance at me, but for the very first time, I felt disappointment.
That was years ago, and since then, I had learned more about the man. I had mentally cataloged each expression of bliss—from an ice-cold beer or the early strains of a saxophone over the Bose speakers. I knew he read old books and picked apart the musicals and operas they inspired like other people did for movies. He also enjoyed the ballet and regularly made use of the box seats Philip kept in support of me. He sneaked a cigarette every couple of months, an addiction he had supposedly cracked but which still nailed him in times of stress.
I learned so much from observing—and so little. Barely ever talking, never ever touching. That was what I did, as Lindsey had pointed out. I had no quickies in the bathroom of a dinner party, no torrid affair with a jetsetter from Paris. Me? I watched. The ultimate voyeur, my mind was drenched with dirty thoughts while my body remained in stasis.
I knew what it felt like to live in the outside world, which was exactly why I preferred my neat, sterile chambers. For years, I had preferred to stay frozen—untouchable. But lately the wicked thoughts about Drew had spilled over into heated feelings and busy fingers at night in my bed. And worse, I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep them to myself.
Amber Lin is one of the authors I have on my must read pile. Her books are full of emotional depth like no other and in this series, I have met some characters that really stayed with me. These ladies are fierce and vulnerable at the same time and they haunt the pages of my mind long after the last page has been read. Tempting Fate is a 100 page journey that hooked me from the first page. The snappy dialog, lush characters with very real flaws and foibles flesh out the pages making this a great read.
4.5/5 Awesome read!! Author you will want on your must read list.
