Not So Silent Night by Sheri Velarde

Not So Silent Night
By
Sheri Velarde

Blurbs:
Another lonely Christmas approaches for Anna and her life of penance—until an otherworldly distraction appears and changes her life.

Anna is a lonely woman, running her dead grandmother's flower shop. She hates Christmas and could not feel more lost when a handsome and mysterious Russian, Alexander, walks into her shop and her life. Each has secrets that they are harboring. Just as their passion erupts, the good old boys in town threaten to ruin everything. Getting to know each other is tough for most couples, adding in magic does not make it any easier. Now with a pack of werewolves out to destroy them, things become intense. They find themselves in a fight for their lives. Can their newfound love give them the strength to win against this threat and trust in the future?

Excerpt:
She had almost finished cleaning up in back when she heard the bell on the door ring less than five minutes before closing. "Seriously? Can't people let me get out of here on time just one damn night?" she muttered to herself as she stormed toward the front so she could wait on her customer and then get the hell out of the store.

Anna whipped around the corner in a huff, not caring if she scared the latecomer away. She stopped in her tracks and almost forgot what had pissed her off when she saw the customer in question. The most breathtaking back view of a man she had ever seen stood just inside the doorway, and her brain stopped working for the moment. Wow, who knew broad shoulders and a great rear could stop a woman in her tracks? While she gawked like an idiot, the man turned around and proved to be even more distracting from the front. This guy was like a wall of muscle, perfect body attached to a very masculine and handsome face with the deepest blue eyes Anna had ever seen.

"Sorry, I know you are about to close, but I need a gift of flowers," he said when he saw Anna. He had a very thick eastern European accent that she thought might be Russian, which of course only made him hotter. She noticed his eyes taking her in, and she couldn't help but stand a little straighter, showing her curves off to her advantage while she absentmindedly ran her fingers through her long, wavy, raven hair, which most men seemed to love.

It took Anna's brain a few moments to catch up before she could speak. Her previous anger and frustration vanished, replaced by eagerness to help this particular customer. "No problem at all. Do you have an idea of what kind of gift you are looking for? Is this for your girlfriend or wife?" Anna held her breath as she waited for this mystery man to answer, a bit annoyed with herself that she cared so much about what he might say.

1. How did you start writing erotic romance? By accident! I went to write a romance story and it turned out hotter than expected and I liked it! I just let the story dictate itself, some romances are sweeter and some are just a bit more erotic. Turns out I am pretty good at the erotic part.

2. Plotter or pantster? Total pantser. I can’t plot to save my life. Well I guess that’s not true I could do it to save my life or someone I love, I am just not wired that way naturally. Once in a while I will make a brief outline, especially if I don’t want to forget some scenes that have popped into my head at odd times. But pretty much I just let the story flow and see where it will take me.

3. What are three things you have on your writing desk? I don’t actually write at a desk. A lot of time I sit on the couch with my two dogs and my phone. For some reason I like to look up words or do quick research on my phone as opposed to the computer. I think it’s because it keeps my document open and encourages me to keep writing.

4. Favorite food? Italian. I love spaghetti and pizza, both with red wine. Yum. Now I’m hungry. lol

5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you? Not So Silent Night is the story of a woman who has almost given up on life and her melancholy is only intensified by the holiday season. Totally something that I can personally relate to and that makes Anna very special to me. Soon a hot and mysterious Russian enters her life and things change drastically for her. Magic, shifter, romance and more await Anna and she will never be the same again. It’s a short and steamy romp that is also full of heart. It’s one of the favorite pieces I have written.

6. I write because I don’t know what else to do with myself. I love writing and always have tons of ideas in my head, so I write them out to help keep my sanity. Doing something that I love for a living is a dream come true for me and I could not be more grateful.

7. What is your favorite type of character to write about? I like damaged characters. People who have issues and are working through them. To me they are the most authentic and the best characters to write. No one is perfect and I don’t think characters should be either.

8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote? The sexiest scene I have ever written is probably here in Not So Silent Night. The opening love scene between Anna and Alexander is pretty hot. They have an instant animal attraction and have no problem acting on it in the back room of Anna’s flower shop. I have a feeling she will never look at her worktable the same way again.

9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field? To write what you love and not to listen to any nay sayers who might be out there. This is a great genre to write in and has many faithful readers.

10. What is next on your writerly horizon? I have a steamy f/f story coming out in January in the “Snowed In” Anthology from Torquere Press. I also will be releasing a collection of vampire shorts on the newly formed Stoker Publishing in February. Stoker Publishing is a joint venture between my husband and I and we are looking forward to really getting it going this New Year! I also am working on no less than three novels and hope to have them out next year as well! Always busy!

Breathless Monday: Holiday Flirts with Heart-A Crystal Angel by Dawn Brower

It's Breathless Monday and the first of a wonderful series of holiday flirts comes drifting like fallen snow across my blog. Dawn Brower joins us with her heartfelt holiday story, A Crystal Angel. I can't wait to read this one...for all those moments in life you just wish you could take back. This is a story that I just know is going to make me reach for the tissues like a historical Hallmark movie. Bring it on! Thanks for being on the blog today Dawn!

1.       How did you start writing erotic romance?
I wouldn't really classify these books as erotic romance. They don't have a high heat level.  There are some sexy scenes, but they are scattered. I like sex scenes in books, but I also enjoy exploring more of their story. What makes them tick. So you want to know how I started writing? My sister made me do it, lol.
2.       Plotter or pantster?
I ride a very fine line between the two. I can plot like nobody's business, but I don't write it down. I have it all in my head. Which is where the panster part comes in, I let the characters direct how the plot unfolds and when everything happens. So if I'm forced to pick one I fall more on the panster side of writing.
3.       What are three things you have on your writing desk?
Well I don't have a desk… Where I write changes from day to day and where I can cart my laptop off to. As I write this I'm sitting at my kitchen table. So I have an empty plate (just ate a sandwich for lunch) and a cup of coffee (the nectar of the gods) and my iPhone next to me.
4.       Favorite food?
Pizza or anything Italian really.
5.       Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
My newest release is a continuation of my first book, A Flawed Jewel. It takes place fourteen years after A Flawed Jewel.  Thor and Pia are dealing with teenage twins and all that goes on with it. I had fun writing this short story, giving life to their offspring. Pia was the most vocal of them all, but they are a pretty strong-willed family.
6.       I write because ____...
The voices in my head make me. Seriously once I opened the tap I couldn't stop. I've learned so much in the past year and I know I will  continue to learn more if I keep writing.
7.       What is your favorite type of character to write about?
The fun ones—the ones who don't hold anything back. Say what they mean and mean what they say kind of characters. You never really know what is going to come out of their mouths.
8.       What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
I really do not know. This might sound crazy but I don't like to think about sex scenes. I almost turn my brain off and just let my fingers take over. I'm not a fan of spilling things on paper regarding sex. Weird I know, but it is what it is.
9.       What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
Just write what you feel you can. Don't try to be like a certain writer, just be yourself and true to your own work.
10.   What is next on your writerly horizon?
I participated in NaNoWriMo for the first time this month. Well that isn't exactly true, I did do camp in July. This is my first National novel month participation though. It was fun, grueling, and worth it. It gave me the motivation to finish my second cowgirl book. With the rough draft done now I just need to move on to the revision stage.

After overhearing the argument between their parents, the twins Liam and Lily, decide to runaway in protest of the contract. Thor and Pia set out to find their rebellious children before something dreadful happens to them. Will Thor convince Pia to forgive him and find the twins before Christmas or will their family fall apart forever?

Book excerpt-
"Don't see the point. Besides I think we need to discuss what I overheard."
"If it isn't about school, I don't care."
"You should, Liam. I told you it would impact your life."
"Well, what is it then?"
"Father agreed on a betrothal contract."
"Failing to understand how this might concern me." Liam waved his hand dismissively and turned back to his game. "Who is he going to marry you off to?"
"Not me you, fool. The Earl of Devon sent one over for him to sign. He's going to marry you off to his daughter, Lady Gemma Kemsley."
Liam's face turned stark white and he swayed in his chair. He turned to look at Lily as the shock settled in. His blue eyes glazed over as the astonishment of her words became clear. "Pardon me, what did you say?"
"You're betrothed, as in when you both come of age, you're getting married. Congratulations, brother of mine."

Holiday Cruise: Pick Your Path to Erotic Romance Book Tour and Giveaway

Happy holidays! I am very pleased to offer you an excerpt of my newest choose your own romantic adventure, Holiday Cruise. Join Erin as she goes off on her first holiday vacation with some friends only to find love and adventure waiting behind every door. What's your passion?

Excerpt:

Erin Chapman stared out at the crowd, and her insides tightened. "Why did I let you guys talk me into this?" The tiny black wrap dress rested high on her thighs, hugging every curve. Her fingers fluttered along the bottom of the skirt, unconsciously pulling at the hem. The new four-inch black heels wobbled. For a second, Erin remained afraid she was going to topple over. She shifted her weight anxiously, resting her hands on the table as she waited with Jace for Nolan and the girls to show up. She listened to the pulse of the music, a lively upbeat version of "Jingle Bells," and it made her smile.
Her friends meant well bringing her on this weekend cruise, but she wasn’t really in the festive mood. They’d been good to her in her first foray into college and the big city. Just a year ago, she’d been trying to get into schools and obsessing about how to break things off with Dylan, her fiancĂ©.
So get over him already and move on with your life.
"Why don't you sit down?" Jace patted a stool next to his at the tall silver bar-style table. "They shouldn't be too much longer."
Erin laughed. "Are you kidding? Somebody I know made this skirt so short, I'd be advertising my wares before my backside even made it to the top of the stool."
"Spoilsport."
Erin rolled her eyes and tugged at the fastenings, making sure the dress stayed secured tightly, yelping when she saw the ties had almost slipped apart. Oh, god. That's all I need.
Jace slapped at her hand, a cross expression on his face.
 "Girl, you’d better not wreck that dress. I have to turn that in for design class next week." He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek. "You’re divine. Go with it." His boyish features sported a shock of sandy brown hair and a muscular form that would have given the football players back home in Tyson's Grove a run for their money.
"I realize that, Jace." Erin smiled sheepishly. "I'm just not used to wearing something this um ... short." Erin brushed her long black hair out of her eyes and tucked it behind her ear. If she’d been thinking more clearly and hadn’t been so freaked out by tonight's last-minute invitation, she would have pinned it up or something. Now it was just going to be in her eyes all night. She gave a mental sigh and watched the crowd move to the music, envious of their fearlessness.
"You're doing me a favor. I want to see my new project come to life. Three years of fashion design, and I am going to get this one in the school show this semester." He brandished his cell phone, and a bright white light strobed outward.
"Jace!" Erin threw up her hands and slugged him in the arm. "Quit it!" Stars flickered behind her eyes as the flash momentarily blinded her.
"Nope." He grinned. "You're my star attraction tonight."
"I thought I was." Nolan stepped up behind him and wound his arms around his lover's waist.
"Hey, Nolan. Any sign of the girls?" Erin was thankful for the reprieve. Nolan remained the more studious of the pair. He was the one who’d answered the phone the day she’d applied for the room for rent. What might have been a horrific first time away from home was eased by the makeshift family the five of them had become over the last few months. She’d been terrified when she’d found out the dorms were already full. To find a room in the gorgeous Victorian house nearby had been total luck.
"Nope. Not yet. When I saw them last, they were working their way up the check-in line up on deck." Nolan pressed a quick kiss on Jace’s cheek and sent Erin an appraising glance. His firm mouth curled as if he was always on the edge of laughter, and the confident set of his shoulders never failed to communicate that he was an alpha male.
"Nice dress. It really is stunning on you, Erin."
Erin blushed, smoothing her hands down the front of the sleek black dress. "Thanks. Do you think it's too short?"

Nolan grinned, his arm around Jace. "With legs like that? No way. Come on. Live a little! Get out there and find someone to play with."

Now, desperate to shed her role as orphaned victim, Via stage dives into a one-hundred-day adventure with Matt and Nick, the bassist and drummer of popular nineties cover band Obliviot. The rock-and-roll lifestyle is the perfect distraction—until she is rattled by true love. As Christmas looms closer, her notorious past becomes undeniable. Chapter 1
SoHo, New York City, December 21, 2004
  *** Via Back to the wall, Via shuffled through the candy cane wilderness, careful not to displace piles of presents or disturb crystal angels. It was so close. Branches prickled against her chin and neck as she stretched into the corner. Needles latched onto her green St. Anne Elementary School sweater. After months of waiting and wondering, there it was—white with a gold bow. She reached out. Her fingertips grazed the paper, the tag. It would have her name on it. “No peeking,” her mother called from the kitchen. “Cookies are almost ready. Come and help.” Guilt settled in and crowded out her naughty curiosity. Mama’s feathery voice lingered in the air, and mingled with the smell of gingersnaps. The front door slammed shut. Her body tensed against the wall as it recognized the rumble of her father’s approach. Her arm retreated to the safety of her side. The hardwood floor vibrated his location in the foyer. He wasn’t supposed to be home from the country yet. He needed his rest. “Ingrid!” he yelled. “Violetta!” He called her Violetta when he was angry. When he was happy, he said she was the heartbeat of the universe. Now that she was eleven, she wasn’t a little kid anymore, but she still called him Daddy. He made her promise she would always call him Daddy. His voice was muffled. The floor was still. He must have stopped to check the front bedrooms, but for how long? That tummy pain was back, the one that burned from the inside out; the one Dr. Peyton said fifth graders shouldn’t have. Being the daughter of Joseph Antonio Rabbotino wasn’t easy. Kids at school called her Rabbit and were never allowed to come over and play. The floor trembled more and more. He must be standing nearby, maybe next to the piano, she thought. She couldn’t see past the tree’s festive colors, and prayed he couldn’t either. She had promised to be a good girl. Her mother’s voice rushed over from the kitchen. It was shrill. “Oh, my God,” she said. “Put that down. You’re not yourself right now.” Put what down? She wondered. Sometimes he brought home presents or pets. “You think I’m crazy?” He let out a harsh laugh she had never heard before. “You think you can drug me and leave me in Connecticut to rot?” A bell near her elbow began to jingle. Don’t be a spaz, she told herself. She had to stop shaking; she just had to. Being invisible meant being silent, so she leaned to the right and smothered it. Her other arm met up with something pointy. “But, you wanted to go, remember?” Her mother was talking really fast. “Dr. Goldman said you should rest, give the new meds some time.” Daddy had a lot of doctors. Daddy took a lot of pills. “I know what you think of me,” he said. “That the critics are right. That I’ll never paint again.” “It’s okay, it’s all going to be okay,” her mother insisted. “But you’ve been drinking. We’ve gotten through this before. Remember?” “Why do you do this to me?” he asked. “Evil little actress. Acting like you love me.” “I do. You know I do.” “Liar.” “Please, put that down. We’ll call Dr. Goldman.” “You sent me away. Do you know what it was like there? Knowing you betrayed me? All you had to do was love me, but you’ve ruined me!” “No, you wanted to go. You needed to rest. Please remember. Please.” “Where’s my Violetta?” “Still at school.” “She should be home by now—home with us. We should be together now. She hiding under her bed again?” His words turned and trailed back toward the front bedrooms. “Violetta! Come when I call you!” “Mama?” She called through the branches. Her mother didn’t seem surprised at all to hear her. “Shh,” she said, faint but firm. It was not her normal ‘shh.’ Something was wrong. Her father’s voice was already growing louder again. “Violetta!” “I’m right here,” she tried to say. She decided that she would come out; then he would be angry with her, not her mother. But, a strange sound surrounded her, like baby birds and chimes. It seemed to come through the Christmas tree lights. She blinked. They were such pretty lights—colors she had never seen before. Buzzing into a haze around her, they were mesmerizing. Shh, its all okay, the lights told her, but not in words. She felt their meaning in her teeth and bones. Come and play with us, they urged. Come play pretend. They flurried about. She tried to speak, but they settled against her tongue like candy-coated snow. They loved her. She watched them spin and shine and gleam and glow. They were everything she needed in that moment, and so she relaxed into the soft aura of Christmas. Her mother was screaming, “She’s not here! She’s not here!” The purest colors were born and danced within reflections of those who had come before. Youre not here, they echoed. Youre with us. They snuggled in and tucked themselves around her. Be still, they insisted. This isnt real. She knew they were right. Nothing was real. She was everywhere and nowhere at all, safe between worlds. Her mother’s golden wall clock started to ding its hourly announcement—once, twice. “You did this,” her father said. A third ding. “You made me do this.” Four. Mama’s voice fluttered. “Remember who you are.” A loud noise exploded throughout the apartment. Ornaments rattled and slipped from their homes, and Via with them. Her hands came up to cover her ears, but his voice soon rode the wave of ringing and broke on through. “Why?” he cried. “Why did you make me do this?” Another explosion ripped away the space around her. She sank down overcome by the bells ringing around her. Why? Why were the bells so loud? It was a gun, she realized. The sound vibrating through her was gunfire. Her shoulder came to rest against the edge of the big box—white with a gold bow. Air came into her lungs in notches, each tighter than the last. She didn’t know what to do. Her trembling hand grasped a branch with a candy cane hanging from it. She began to pull it back. “Mama?” Dont look, the pretty lights urged her. Its not real. Its not her. But it was too late. She had already peered past the angels—and through to the other side. “Ma—” Mouth open, heart lost, she released the branch and it sprang back into place. Its candy cane held strong. The pretty lights spoke no more, but hummed and tingled. The murmur of their adoration grew faint and she began to panic. She curled up into herself, tight and small, desperate to disappear back into their protection. “Please, pretty lights. Please don’t go.” She blinked and the lights were just lights. The floors roared. New voices overtook the fading bells. People were yelling. People were coming. An alarm shrieked overhead. The taste of gingersnap dust burnt through the air. “Please, pretty lights,” she called out again, even though she knew they were gone.   ppl -Banner

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt from Letters at Christmas by Amber Lin
Hale’s presence stirred the air behind her. She stared straight ahead at the frost-covered panes. His breath ruffled her hair.
“Were you looking for me?” he whispered. “You knew I’d arrive today. Is that why the window was open?”
An embarrassed flush heated her skin. She felt too exposed, like a raw nerve. Still, there was one advantage to being found out. She didn’t have to hide any longer. Turning, she faced him.
He bent his head to her. He was going to kiss her. She should turn away. She should tell him no. His lips met hers directly, and she moaned. She truly moaned, aloud. He could hear her, and instead of dying of mortification, she wrapped her arms around his neck. He made a sound of surprise before holding her more closely. His hand slipped to the small of her back and pulled her against him. His other hand fanned along her jaw, holding her steady as he kissed her. She needed his guidance because her body had lost all sense and reason. Her limbs trembled, her heart raced.
“Hale?”
“Jesus, I missed you.”
It was the wrong thing to say. She pulled back. “You didn’t write. You promised to write to me. Every single day, you said.” She let sarcasm color her voice. “You could have skipped a few days. That would have been fine.”
“I wrote.”
“No letters. Not even one.” She laughed hollowly. “You said you loved me, Hale, and you couldn’t even bring yourself to write one letter.”
“I did… Damn it.” He ran a hand through his hair.
She waited for him to explain what he meant. A lump lodged in her throat when he said nothing. He’d forgotten about her, and now he was lying to her. For what purpose? So he could win a bet? Because he’d gotten tired of traveling the world and could now settle for poor little Sidony?
“Get out,” she said evenly.
“Sidony.”
Review:
This collection of stories was a wonderful and heartwarming. Amber Lin always plucks at my heart strings and she can tell a tale, no matter what time she writes about. Kitty cats and missing letters abound in this lovely story of coming home. I loved it. Reading the second story, Eight Tiny Flames by Crista McHugh, you feel like you are there in the wartime fray Excellent piece. I want to read more from this author. :) An Eternity of You by Sophia Garrett was amazing.  Erin's Gift by Nancy Fraser was a heart wrenching story of love, loss and happiness. I have enjoyed every story I have ever read by Nancy Fraser and was excited to read this one. Great compilation and I hope there is another grouping like this next year.
4.5/5
About Sophia Garrett:
Sophia Garrett always knew she wanted to be a writer, and more specifically, a historical romance writer. Her teenage years were spent rabidly gobbling up the newest books from romance icons such as Johanna Lindsey, Sabrina Jefferies, Julie Garwood, and Kathleen E. Woodiweiss. She composed her first romance novel about the American Revolution, in high school.
When Sophia is not researching...well, she's always researching! But in her non-working hours she enjoys studying historical events (yes, she's one of those girls), watching documentaries, taking in action-packed dramas at the theatre, and spending as much time as possible with her two young sons collecting bugs, racing Hot Wheels, and smashing things in video games.
Her second passion is animals, so much so that at one time she considered a career in veterinary medicine. Chemistry, however, waged war on her sanity, and she decided training horses was far less harmful than trying to manipulate miniscule objects that can't be seen. Setting her sweatshirt on fire in lab might have had something to do with that. She still has her horses but has added a chicken...or two. And a duck. And a (house) pig. And several dogs. And cats. And... who knows what might turn up next!
Sophia frequently attends conferences and signing events that take her throughout the United States. In addition, she often presents for her local Romance Writers of America chapters and is available to present to additional authors' groups. She loves to connect with readers and writers alike, so be sure to say hello!
CRISTA McHUGH
Crista McHugh is a multiple award-winning author of fantasy romance and paranormal romance with heroines who are smart, sexy, and anything but ordinary.
Growing up in small town Alabama, Crista relied on story-telling as a natural way for her to pass the time and keep her two younger sisters entertained.
She currently lives in the Audi-filled suburbs of Seattle with her husband and two children, maintaining her alter ego of mild-mannered physician by day while she continues to pursue writing on nights and weekends.
Just for laughs, here are some of the jobs she's had in the past to pay the bills: barista, bartender, sommelier, stagehand, actress, morgue attendant, and autopsy assistant.
And she's also a recovering LARPer. (She blames it on her crazy college days)
Amber Lin writes erotic romance with damaged souls and deep emotion.
Amber married her high school sweetheart, birthed a kid who’s smarter than she is, and spends her nights writing down her dirty thoughts. In other words, life is good
NANCY FRASER:
Like most authors, Nancy began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher's pet which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it.
In her time away from writing, Nancy dotes on her five grandchildren. She's currently happily single (let's face it, it's difficult to find a man who can live up to her sexy, fictitious heroes) and enjoying life as is for the time being.
