Why do I subject myself to his bullshit? Anyone with eyes can see I’m merely his trophy. I feel completely stuck. People like me don’t go up against people like him. And if we do muster up the balls to do so, it’s usually on a night we’ve had too much to drink or popped some pills, maybe both. A false sense of power is the only way you can block out what’ll happen if you do—no job, no friends, and close to having the life sucked out of you.
I close my eyes and let out a long breath. Knowing I’m in bed with the devil and may be here for fifteen more years leaves me empty inside. I might go insane dealing with his bullshit, but at least it’ll be for a good reason—Lily.
She’s my baby girl and my heartbeat. Everything about her is beautiful. I hear her up in the next room so I remove his arm from around my waist and swing my legs over to the side of the bed. As I’m about to slide my feet into my slippers, he brings his arm around my waist and pulls me back toward him.
“Where are you going? I didn’t say you could get up.”
He sits up and pushes the spaghetti strap of my gown so it falls off my shoulder and begins to kiss me.
“Our daughter is awake.” My back is still turned and as usual, my skin is crawling from his touch.
“She’ll be fine. I want to taste you before I leave.”
He pushes me back and uses his mouth to pull up the thin, silk fabric until my bottom half is exposed. Spreading my legs apart, he dives in head first. Not even a minute later, there’s a soft, almost faint, knock on the door.
Putting my hand on his shoulder, I gesture for him to move. I try to sit up but he’s pressing down on my stomach, urging me to stay put.
He comes from under the cover. “Give it a minute, she’ll go away.”
I’m nauseated, and he’s the reason why. He thinks I’m going to pretend not to hear her while he drills me.
“She’s our daughter. We can’t ignore her.”
He swears and rolls over as the knob turns and Lily walks in. I pull the cover to my neck and sit up. I’m still adjusting my slip nightie underneath the sheet when she runs over.
“Good morning, Mommy. Morning, Daddy.” Lily’s carrying her favorite doll, standing next to the bed, rocking on her heels.
“Hey there, sunshine.” I’m happy to see her and I’m glad she came in when she did. My rescuer.
Erik, her father, huffs before rising slightly and resting on his elbows. “Lily, I need you to go into your room while I talk to Mommy.”
Unbelievable. He wants her to leave. I look over at him and roll my eyes, not giving a shit about the hard-on in his pants.
“But I want breakfast.” She clenches her doll to her stomach and frowns.
Furrowing my brows, I give Erik a piercing stare-down. Giving me the cold shoulder, he rolls over on his side and doesn’t bother to apologize to Lily. He’s her father but treats her as if she’s a burden. He’s the burden. I only wish I would have known it before I got pregnant by him.
For the sake of Lily, I’m still here. If I leave with her, he’ll find us and take her from me. With his power and influence, I won’t stand a chance going up against him. He reminds me of it often, threatening to bring up how we met.
I saved you from a lifestyle in which you were putting yourself at risk. Don’t forget which one of us has the law degree. He didn’t save me because I wasn’t at risk. If anything, he was the real danger. I wish I would have realized it sooner.
Brushing off the thought, I redirect my attention back to Lily.
“And I was about to go fix your favorite chocolate chip pancakes and strawberries with a big glass of milk.” I smile and pull her into my lap. “But first, no more sad faces.” I bring my hands up and start to wiggle my fingers.
“No tickle monster,” she squeals, breaking into a giggle even before my fingers touch her. Her snickering laugh brings me joy, and I’m ready to start my day.
“Let’s go brush your hair and change out of our jammies. What do you say?”
“Yay!” Lily cheers while hopping out of the bed and then grabs my hand as she takes the lead.
“What are you doing?” he calls out.
“Tending to our daughter as I should be.”
I don’t bother to look back as we stroll into the bathroom. There’s no need to. I’m pretty sure he’s pissed.
A few minutes pass and he comes in behind us. Looking into the mirror, I’m more than a little annoyed to see him standing in the doorway with a scolding look on his face. Lily’s standing right next to me humming and bobbing her head, running the comb through her hair.
We rinse our mouths. This morning, he’s got a chip on his shoulder. Maybe I need to get Lily out of the way in case things get heated.
“Go change, darling, and I’ll be right out.” I give her a quick pat on her back and Lily takes off.
Now I’m left to deal with the hostile, controlling idiot in front of me.
“Stop frowning around her. She’ll think she did something wrong.” I scowl, pushing past him and head back into our bedroom.
He grabs my wrist and yanks me forward.
“Ouch. You’re hurting me.” I rub the sore spot to ease the pain.
“Good. Now I have your attention. Get back into bed.”
