The road to publication can be long and bumpy
by Cassandra Carr
In mid-January I released a new book titled Public Affairs. I began working on Public Affairs sometime in Q4 2011. I finished it in April 2012 and gave it to the my then-agent. When I switched agents eight months later I handed it to her and she sent it out to several NY publishers. They rejected it for different reasons during 2013, and I re-wrote sections of it based on things they said. Late in 2013 that agent and I parted ways (amicably) and I was sick to DEATH of this story. But I hate writing words I don't publish, so I sent it to two friends and asked them to be brutal in their feedback.
They were. And yes, I appreciated it. I have a thick skin, like all authors needs. I can handle criticism, especially if I think it's going to improve my book.
Based on their problems, I once again re-wrote Public Affairs from top to bottom. Then I had it edited, found a cover for it, and put it out in the world. At the end, from first draft to publication, that was about two years and four months. This wasn't my first book by any means. I have over 30 releases. So what happened?
In a few words, the perfect storm of problems. But I love this book and I wanted other people to enjoy it. I refused to give up on it, even when it seemed like maybe I should. I hope some of you take a chance on it.

ReplyDeleteWhat an impressive story, Cassandra - if it was the perfect storm of problems, it's also the perfect illustration of Never Give Up.
