Guest Post:
The road to publication can be long and bumpy
by Cassandra Carr

In mid-January I released a new book titled Public Affairs. I began working on Public Affairs sometime in Q4 2011. I finished it in April 2012 and gave it to the my then-agent. When I switched agents eight months later I handed it to her and she sent it out to several NY publishers. They rejected it for different reasons during 2013, and I re-wrote sections of it based on things they said. Late in 2013 that agent and I parted ways (amicably) and I was sick to DEATH of this story. But I hate writing words I don't publish, so I sent it to two friends and asked them to be brutal in their feedback.

They were. And yes, I appreciated it. I have a thick skin, like all authors needs. I can handle criticism, especially if I think it's going to improve my book.

Based on their problems, I once again re-wrote Public Affairs from top to bottom. Then I had it edited, found a cover for it, and put it out in the world. At the end, from first draft to publication, that was about two years and four months. This wasn't my first book by any means. I have over 30 releases. So what happened?

In a few words, the perfect storm of problems. But I love this book and I wanted other people to enjoy it. I refused to give up on it, even when it seemed like maybe I should. I hope some of you take a chance on it.

Untangle My Heart

Untangle My Heart
by Maria K. Alexander

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When her marriage ended in tragedy, Kate DiFrancesco rebuilt her life, but has never gotten over the pain of what she lost. Seeking the help of an ex-lover ignites feelings she’s promised never to have again. She’ll need to untangle herself from dangers in her past in order to break the hard shell around her heart.
Edward Weston has a lot to prove, both to his stuffy upper-crust British family, and to  himself. Working alongside Kate, a woman he had a casual relationship with, stirs unexpected feelings. Helping her family makes him realize what he's missing. For the first time, he wants more than a one-night stand.
When Kate is threatened, Edward must overcome feeling unworthy to protect the woman he loves and fight for the family he never thought he’d have.
Excerpt Three:
Edward raised an eyebrow toward her. “Are you sure you’re up for sledding?” he asked, with a glance down at her black high-heeled boots.
She shot him a challenging look. “Only if we race against you.”
“Me?”
“Lucas and I against you. Loser buys dinner.”
He studied her, almost as though he were weighing how he could turn this contest in his favor. Then he turned to Lucas. “Why don’t you grab two sleds, sport, while I negotiate with Kate?”
Lucas nodded and ran off.
Edward hooked his fingers in her jacket pockets and pulled her closer. “How about if I win, you go on a date with me?”
“That’s playing dirty.”
“Very well. You can explain to Lucas why we’re not racing.”
“I can’t do that. Just look at how excited he is.” She nodded over to where Lucas stood waiting for available sleds, jumping up and down and an enthusiastic grin on his face.
“My sled, my rules, or are you afraid you’ll lose?”
He struck a nerve and he knew it. She couldn’t back down from the challenge. Besides, she’d been rethinking the whole not-dating thing and almost convinced herself she was being ridiculous for fighting their attraction. So no matter what happened, she’d figured she’d win.
She met the challenge of his gaze. “One date—and don’t expect sex.”
He attempted to look shocked, but one side of his mouth twitched. “Certainly not.”
“Fine. Be prepared to lose.”
The Raven's Kill: A Visit with Ella Grey
Raven is a shifter with the ability to see the darkness in a person's soul. He has never strayed off his path or let a target live before, until he meets Cassandra for the first time. She's an innocent, so why does someone want her dead?
As soon as she laid eyes on the mysterious man, she wants him with an intensity that scares her. When he appears in her room one night with an impossible story, she doesn't have a choice, believe him or die when someone else takes the job he's refused.
It's a fight against time and an attraction that scares them both, no-one knows what the future holds. Even a fledgling seer.
Excerpt:
 Her moans had echoed all over the mansion. Raven had even heard them from his place on the roof; he'd shifted long enough to enter from the skylight before taking his human form again and headed to investigate. No lights highlighted the dark corridors but it wasn't a problem. The dog remained silent in the kitchen, a terrible guard. The moans made him rock hard, she was the only one in the house which left one very interesting possibility.
It didn't take long to find her room, the door slightly ajar and he pushed it open a little more.  Cassandra writhed on the bed, one hand between her legs and the other on her chest. He watched her come undone and knew he could do it better. He wanted her to fall apart with his tongue lapping at her juices, sucking and teasing her until she called out his name. He quite liked the fantasy and missed her eyes opening, resting on him. Her scream ripped through the air.
Well, what did you expect? That she'd pull you into her arms and you could finally find out what her lips taste like?
Raven darted from his place in the doorway and pressed his hand across her mouth. "I won't hurt you." The words left him in a rush but she fought against him. "Cassandra, I don't intend to hurt you. Listen to me. Please listen to me." She slowly stopped fighting but her eyes were wide, her breathing fast. "I'm going to remove my hand. Don't scream or I'll be forced have to put my hand over your mouth again."
For the first time in his life, he didn't know what he was doing. The smell of her desire, mixed with the vanilla perfume that seemed embedded into her skin, filled the air and it was distracting as hell. "Trust me?"
It was asking a lot and he knew it but she finally nodded. The impression of her lips against his hand felt like a burn, as if the brief touch left a scar against his skin.
 "Please don't hurt me."
Her words made him angry but not at her, he didn't want her to be scared of him. "I already said I won't."
 Cassandra moved away from him, turning to face him. She nibbled at her bottom lip, her fingers twisted together. "What do you want?"
Interview:
1.       How did you start writing erotic romance?
I write multiple genres and I started with erotic romance after I wrote a short story about a vampire strip club that was accepted into an anthology. I then wrote two bdsm stories and a free erotic romance. It all depends on the story.
2.       Plotter or pantster?
If I have a deadline, I'm a plotter, no deadline gives me a lot more freedom to let the story guide me.
3.       What are three things you have on your writing desk?
Lol I wish I had a writers desk, usually I write in the living room or the bedroom. Take now for instances, I'm sitting on the couch. To the left I've got my phone and the television remote and on the right, a dinosaur and a child's book.
4.       Favorite food?
Chinese takeaways.
5.       Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
It was Raven, he's the assassin. I had this strong mental image of a bird watching a woman from the rooftops. The story unfolded from there.
6.       I write because ____...
It's what I'm supposed to do.
7.       What is your favorite type of character to write about?
That's a hard question, it's a little like asking me what child I like the best. I like writing paranormal characters, which gives them an extra dimension in my opinion.
8.       What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
In Irish Kisses I wrote a scene where my characters joined the mile high club. That was pretty darn sexy.
9.       What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field?
Find your own niche, don't write what happens to be popular because that might not be your genre.
10.   What is next on your writerly horizon?
A steampunk story for another publisher, it's a mystery, without erotica or romance undertones.
 About the author:
Ella Grey always knew that she'd become a writer. Well, it was either that or a brain surgeon but her heart wasn't in it. She's constantly had voices in her head, which could have ended up being strapped in a strait jacket and being locked in a padded cell. Thankfully she picked up a pen and put it to paper.
She currently lives in the UK with her son, partner and cat. She rarely sleeps and can often be found with a cup of coffee close to one hand, with her other hand on the keyboard.
Tempting Clover
Breaking a goblin's curse is more difficult than Clover thought. Especially when love and nightshade are crucial ingredients.
For two years, Clover has been at a goblin's beck and call. Two years of no orgasms. Until she heard a rumor the sage witch could help her break the goblin's curse. There's only a few minor details, like how would she find love on short notice and how deadly are nightshade berries?
Reed's life was simple—own a bar, walk to work, fight a little. He didn't expect to tangle with a wanton elfess who disappeared on him not once but twice. Let alone save her from a depraved goblin. He'd sworn off women like her for good, so why did he feel the need to protect her?
Excerpt:
Clover watched his chest widen as he inhaled. He owned the bar and did the tending? Impressive. One little thing to settle. "My savior..." she purred and reached for him, sliding her body up against his. "What do you want for your heroic deed, sir?" Her voice took on a note of sarcasm. "Perhaps I should repay you with a nice, long fuck. Is that what you want?" She brushed a hand along his chest and walked a circle around him. It's what all men wanted, and if she could oblige, she would. Despite her hurt pride, she found his masculinity, his strength penetrating every part of the bar, captivating.
"I want nothing from you. I only did what any gentleman would have done, Elfess."
Her heart skipped. He'd already nicknamed her. Anger flared. "I can handle myself. You had no reason to interfere." It didn't matter that she liked the nickname and how it rolled off his tongue in that smooth low voice. She didn't need a protector.
People began to stare.
"And what could you have done as his fist collided with your pretty face? I couldn't have that now, could I?" His eyebrow arched.
"It wouldn't have hit me. I would have moved out of the way. He was slow. I had everything under control. You men are all the same—only looking to fulfill your own pride, make sure you're seen in a good light. I'm no distressed elfling." Clover stepped back.
Anger permeated him. His nostrils flared out and his face turned the cutest shade of red. Clover resisted the urge to smile.
"Next time, I will oblige your pride." He advanced on her, taking away the distance between them. His jaw clenched when he reached her. Clover moved backward, wary of his intentions. His green eyes glared. "Are you worried now, Elfess?"
Guest Post:
Want to improve your writing?
Then go forth and read.
Spend hours doing research, by reading for pleasure.
It restores your creativity while teaching you how to write…Obviously the author you're reading is pretty good to keep your interest.
My top five restored learning books are:
1.      Dark Prince by Christine Feehan.
Feehan can write some amazing tension between her characters and she uses a call and response form to her style of writing- she writes narrative, then about relationship, then narrative, then back to relationship. It's like the blues only done in writing form.
2.      Lothaire by Kresley Cole.
Cole is by far one of my newest favorite authors. I love how outrageous and shocking her characters are. It compels me to read more at the same time making my mouth drop in shock that it had happened- to the character- I want to learn how to do this, how to draw this kind of reaction from a reader. So I will research more- reading her books over and over again.
3.      Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison.
Harrison really has a strong leading female. She created a great cast to round out her lead female, Rachel, and I'm in awe how much I love her secondary chaarcters. I want to know how secondary characters come so naturally in her books and how to apply something similar in mine, to make a secondary character so endearing…
4.      Fever by Karen Moning.
Moning created a brilliant world with the fae and of course the legendary Jericho barrens who is the ultimate bad boy. This bad boy character has swept through her readers, stealing hearts. While I read her for pleasure, again she is another author with the balls to actually make her character blunt and so forthright that my mouth drops at what he says. The dialogue in Moning's books are delicious and I could learn a thing or two by reading her series.
5.      Moon Called By Patricia Briggs.
How do I explain Mercy from Brigg's stories. She is the ultimate tom boy who can shift into a coyote and catches the undivided attention of her neighbor who happens to be the lead alpha in his were pack. One of my favorite thing a about this author is her ability to add a tiny detail like a walking stick and have it mean so much later not only in the book but throughout the series. I want to do that- foreshadow without coming out with it. Having something right before a readers eyes only for them to easily disregard it, because really- a walking stick? I love it.
The lesson to take away here is as a writer, you favorite books and authors have so much to give you, if you'll only look. And think of it this way, the next time someone interrupts you reading you can tell them you are working.          ~Decadent Kane
About the author:
               If I had to describe myself, it would be in a word that has infinite meanings with a complexity which falls off the tongue.
A word made up of many elements, is deceptive in appearance, and creates an illusion from the imagination.
My word would be Phantasmagoric.
Wicked Satyr Nights: A Visit with Rebekah Lewis
Some creatures want to be found.
When Dr. Katerina Silverton travels into the Pine Barrens to make a documentary on the Jersey Devil, she doesn't believe she will uncover any supernatural evidence. In fact, she only takes the job because it promises funding for future projects. So it is quite a shock to Kat when she finds herself face-to-face with the legendary beast she was sent into the forest to capture on film.
In ancient Greece, the god Pan made a terrible mistake which resulted in the creation of the Satyroi: a race of immortal satyrs. Centuries later, he lives secluded in the Pine Barrens, frightening mortals by taking the guise of an abhorrent local monster. When a beautiful woman shows up in his forest looking for proof of his existence, Pan can't resist revealing himself to her.
Outside forces may be manipulating them both, pushing them together for nefarious reasons. Kat must decide if she could learn to love a satyr or if his appearance is more than she can handle. Can she resist Pan's wicked nature, or will she give into the temptations beyond her wildest fantasies?
Excerpt:
Kat groaned as the sunlight caressed her eyelids. Mornings sucked. She opened her eyes and the events from the previous night clicked back into her memory. Peter was sitting on top of the chest of drawers, and his hands were resting against the wood edge of the piece of furniture visible between his open, denim-clad thighs. He arched a brow and smirked as he watched her become aware of him.
"It wasn't a nightmare, was it?" Her fear wasn't with her anymore. Instead, she felt the pull of sadness gripping her heartstrings. What would to happen to her? Cindy and Rick must be freaking out.
"I'm 'fraid not, vixen. I owe you explanations, and now that you slept off your denial and panic, you might be able to handle it." He snorted. "You know the word 'panic' is derived from the god Pan's enjoyment of hiding in bushes and startling trespassers as they wandered through the Arcadian forests?"
Ugh, Greek gods again? She didn't know why he found his comment so amusing, so she didn't comment on that part of his statement. "Vixen?"
Peter let out a great sigh, probably because she wasn't biting at his baited hook. "Your hair and your spirit. Reminds me of a fox because of the color and your cunningness..." He scrunched his nose up. "Is cunningness a word? Anyway, you're also a female, ergo, vixen." He pushed himself off the chest of drawers, the muscles in his arms flexing as he did so, and onto the floor. He landed lightly on his bare feet—the toed variety, not the hoofed ones. He was dressed the same as the night before. He'd lost the shirt, though, and sported just the jeans. If he was attempting to turn her on with those scrumptious abs and the thick, corded muscle that led into the waistband of his jeans, she was deeply ashamed it was kind of working.
As strange as the whole situation was, her body still reacted to his. Not as strongly as it had the first time, but the arousal was there, beneath the surface. Too afraid to notice it the night before, it had reared its head once more. She worried about her reaction to him as it couldn't be natural, yet it felt like it was.
Peter held a hand out to her, and she warily accepted it. He pulled her to her feet and led her into the hall. Kat half expected human hands holding elaborate candelabras to extend from the walls, moving as they passed, like in the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera. Except Peter would turn around, half demon-faced, and proclaim he was the devil of New Jersey rather than the Opera Ghost.
1. How did you start writing erotic romance? Honestly, I am still surprised that happened. My first book idea was for a YA. Then I had this idea for a stand alone satyr book (the story ended up being what is now book two: Under the Satyr Moon) and from there a series idea sprouted up and it spiraled from there. Plus, you can't have satyrs without sex. It is like cookies without milk: wrong. ;)
2. Plotter or pantster? A little of both. I plot out the major plot points to know where I am trying to get to and then everything in between I just let happen on its own.
3. What are three things you have on your writing desk?
Pepsi, a statue of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, and an autographed Photoshoped picture of Norman Reedus licking my face (long-not-so-long story. I Photoshopped my face on a picture to be funny. My friend printed it and took it to a convention and had him sign it. So embarrassing!)
4. Favorite food?
Macaroni and cheese. It is catching up to me, I think.
5. Tell us a little about your new release. What character in the book really spoke to you?
Well, it is the print version of Wicked Satyr Nights. It is the story of Kat who goes to the Pine Barrens to film a documentary on the Jersey Devil and discovers the legendary monster really exists and is actually a satyr and the Greek god, Pan. While I love both of my protagonists, the character that was the most vocal to me was Pan's father, Hermes. In fact, he is back for book two and getting a novella of his very own.
6. I write because… if I don't, I will have crazy voices in my head and will be driven slowly insane. Writing what they are telling me shuts them up…eventually.
7. What is your favorite type of character to write about?
Characters with no filter. Hermes in Wicked Satyr Nights and Artemis in Under the Satyr Moon were quite fun.
8. What is the sexiest scene you ever wrote?
Oh gosh. *blushes* Probably a scene that is in Under the Satyr Moon. Since it doesn't come out for a few more months, I can't really say much about it other than one character does something to tempt and taunt the other and it backfires on them…sexily.
9. What advice would you give new authors in the erotica/romance field? If you are shy like me, you will have blazing red cheeks while writing the steamy scenes, and it can halt the creative flow while trying to get things just right. I basically lay the backbone for those scenes without getting into the details on the first draft, that way I can keep the story rolling while it is in my head. On the first revision I will go into the nitty gritty details that make me think I can never let my family read my books. Hahaha.
10. What is next on your writerly horizon? Under the Satyr Moon will be out in the spring, I'm so excited! And later this year the Hermes novella should be out as well as a standalone pirate time travel novella.
Banging in the New Year: Swinger's O-Zone Bash!
For fans of Swinger's Club, an erotic romance, featuring Josh and Carrie's smokin' hot New Year's night!
Banging in the New Year, Swingers O Zone Bash!
Check it out-for a couple of days the book will be free so don't miss out!
“The O Zone? Where’s that?” Josh thought he had a handle on all the swinger hot spots in northern New York.
“It’s as far away as the Big Apple. I think it’d be great for New Years and a holiday.” Carrie replied. From the smiles their friends, Byron and Sylvia were sporting, it looked like they were interested too.
“Okay. So where is it?”
When Carrie replied Canada, he shook his head. What the hell do reserved and oh so polite Canadians, know about swinging?
“Look, Toronto’s getting a real reputation for good times! Did you see Letterman the other night?”
Even his good friend, Byron agreed with Carrie.
Josh is outvoted, and the couples are off to the O-Zone, Toronto’s premier Swinger’s Couples Club for a two day holiday. The first night, they take in a hockey game where the action on the ice is anything but reserved.
From a raucous hotel pre-party, to the Dirty… heck, Filthy Dancing at the club, it promises to be one hot night in the Great White North!
The body checking at the game gets eclipsed by a virgin MILF (what the heck is a virgin MILF?) who has some ideas of stick handling of her own. She has a cherry to lose, and Josh is her number one draft pick.
It’s hot and erotic when Carrie’s there for the assist! Josh scores and then shoots!
** This erotic romance is for adults only! Contains hot and steamy sex between two (and lots more) awesome characters.**
Excerpt:
“Now I just want you guys to know something,” said Beth. She looked between Carrie and Josh with her eyes steady.
“What’s up?” said Josh.
“Well… it’s this…” Beth glanced over to Ben, who nodded silently, urging her on. She turned her head and looked at the dance floor for a moment. It was filled with people dancing in the New Year.
Beth’s fingers were knotted. Oh man… she was nervous!
“What’s the problem, Beth?” Carrie placed her hand on top of Beth’s. “Look, if you’re having second thoughts, then no harm, no foul, okay? We’d love to play with you, but if you’re not ready, that’s fine. If it’s not fun, why bother?” She tried to smile as sweetly as she could.
“No, it’s not that,” Beth shook her head. “Not at all.” She looked over to Ben, who remained silent. “We’ve been talking all night, since I met you guys back at the hotel. Talking about playing with you.” She turned to Josh. “You really, really turn me on!”
“Well… thanks!” Josh shot back a cheese grin.
“You have good taste in men, Beth,” said Carrie, turning from Josh to check out Ben again. He was at least ten years younger than Beth, and slender to the point of lithe. She was going to get to play with David Bowie if all went well. His contrasting eye color was amazing, and he had the same shaped mouth. Ben smiled back.
“Go on, honey,” he said. “You wanted to do the talking on this.” What was this all about, anyway?
“Okay… it’s this. Ben and I have been coming to the O-Zone for four years now. This is our fourth New Year’s Eve here, and we live in the area, so we come here about every so often for a night out.”
“I don’t blame you,” said Josh. “It’s a dynamite place.”
Beth nodded. “It sure is. Ben and I come here, dance, get all turned on, and jump each other’s bones in the back. Then we watch other couples go at it, get turned on again, and screw like minks!” she grinned when she said that.
“Ohh-kaay…” said Carrie. “And the problem is…” her eyebrows were raised, urging Beth on.
Beth sucked in her breath. “Okay, cards on the table. We’ve been coming to a Swinger’s Club for four years, and have had a great time. But…” she gazed between Josh and Carrie. “We’ve never had sex with other people!”
Carrie’s jaw dropped open. Her mouth came up and down a couple times, but she had nothing to say.
“But you think you’re ready now,” said Josh.
Beth nodded. He turned to Ben who nodded vigorously. Looking at them, Carrie realized the two men could have been roommates at University.
“And… you’d like your first time playing to be with us.”
They nodded again.
Carrie took Beth’s hand. “That’s sweet, Beth! I promise to not be gentle!” Beth laughed.
“Hang on a second,” said Josh, “I got a question for you guys. How much you been drinking?”
“We got a nice buzz, but we’re not hammered, if that’s what you mean,” said Ben. “Why?”
“Look man,” Josh put his arm around Ben’s shoulder. “We’re flattered as hell, but I had to ask, okay? The last fucking thing I want is for you guys to wake up tomorrow with regrets, you know what I mean?” He gestured to the dance floor. “Carrie and I are full swap swingers with our friends, yeah. We’ve been to a few clubs as well as a bunch of house parties. We got into it pretty quickly, because that’s what we wanted. But…” Again he waved at the dance floor, and at the people at the tables and couches surrounding it, and the bar at the opposite end of the club. “But, I’ll bet you dollar to a donut…”
“Or a Timbit,” Ben said with a smile.
“What’s a Timbit?”
“Skip it. Tell ya later. Sorry man, go on.”
Josh shook his head. “I think we just had a culture clash for a sec.” He grinned. “Anyway! What I’m trying to say is that I’ll bet that half the people that come out to clubs like the O-Zone don’t play with others. Shit man, they call it a ‘Couples Club’ for a reason, you know.”
“We’ve been asked,” said Beth. “By some really nice people over the times we came here. But we were never ready until tonight.”
“Ready between the both of you, you mean, right?” said Josh.
Beth nodded.
“Who had the jealousy issues, Beth?” Josh asked as softly as the music playing in the club would allow.
Wordlessly, Beth pointed to her chest with a wan smile and nodded.
“What happened that changed it? This is important…”
“It was the way you looked at me back at the hotel…” she said. “There was no question that I turned you on.” Her eyes grew wide and she leaned into Carrie. “I hope that doesn’t offend you!”
“Silly! Not at all!”
“Look, I’m not going to toss numbers around, but let’s just say that I lost my virginity looonnng before Ben did, okay? And we’ve only been married for four years…”
“But a couple for eight, honey,” chimed in Ben. He looked to Josh, then Carrie. “She’s always been worried I’m going to have my head turned by a younger woman.” He shook his head smiling. “For a PhD in philosophy, she can be sooo dumb sometimes!”
“Turn me on? You’re stunning, Beth,” said Josh.
“I really felt that. You really find me hot.” Josh nodded silently.
“Me too, hon,” said Carrie.
Beth blushed and stared at the tabletop for a moment. She lifted her head. “Uhh… so now what do we do?”
“Well,” said Josh, “You guys obviously have given this some thought.”
“All afternoon and tonight, man.” Said Ben. “I masturbated her earlier just over there,” he tilted his head back at the couch they had been seated on. “And when I was doing her, I was whispering to her how bad you want to fuck her like an animal. She was watching your back and came like three times.” He inhaled. “It was so fucking cool!”
“Well, you’ve thought about it, discussed it between yourselves, and you’re not drunk.” Josh put his hand on the back of each woman seated at the table. “We just need a unanimous vote here then. I’m excited, and I’d love to play with you guys. Carrie?”
“With one addendum,” said Carrie with a sly smile.
“What’s that?”
“I get to kiss her first!” She leaned over and took Beth’s face in her hands. The two women gazed into each other’s eyes as Carrie licked her own lips with a slow, deliberate, lascivious tongue.
“You okay with this, Beth?”
Eyes wide, she said “I haven’t kissed a girl since college! But yes!”
“Ready or not…” Carrie leaned in and kissed Beth on the lips, holding her mouth there.
Beth closed her eyes as soon as their mouths touched and Josh could see her jaw open a little. He knew what Carrie was doing now. Their tongues entwined, Carrie’s entering Beth’s mouth softly at first, and as the kiss continued, Beth’s mouth began to flex as she brought her hands up behind Carrie’s head, pulling her in tighter.
“Whoaaa dude…” said Ben quietly. “This is hot!
Since I’ve written a bunch of books about Swinging, I thought it would be fair to my readers and also to anyone else interested to tell a bit about my own journey into this wonderful, exciting world that I’ve made with my husband.
First of all, I need to confess something- I really don’t like the term ‘Swinging’. Okay, okay, it’s better than other terms that were used in the past, such as ‘Wife Swapping’ (ugh… how misogynist and paternalistic). For me, I prefer the term Michael and Holli use in their radio program ‘Live Sexy!’ At any rate, ‘Lifestyle’, ‘Live Sexy’, or ‘Swinging’ to me all describe the fun a committed couple has with each other in an erotic environment. Does that include having sex with others? Sure, but it’s not a requirement; that depends upon what you want…
Okay, so how the heck did I get involved in the Lifestyle?
The short answer is my husband Spike asked me. A few years ago, New Year’s Eve was coming up, and I wanted to go out to a club to celebrate.
In the course of our relationship, I had dabbled in the BDSM community (this is way before 50 Shades). While I liked going—the passion and eroticism was great, I also wouldn’t have minded being able to dance. Club music and BDSM… not so much outside of a scene in a dungeon, but that’s another story.
So when we were talking about New Year’s Eve, he said, “Well, you enjoyed those BDSM parties… what would you think of a night out that has the same, if not more, sexy atmosphere with dancing too?”
“Sounds too good to be true.”
He didn’t say anything. “Okay,” I said, “I’ll bite. What do you have in mind?”
“We could go to a Swinger’s club for New Year’s. It’s one of their biggest party nights.”
A Swinger’s Club? Is he kidding? A sleazy, club that’d I’d be expected to HAVE SEX WITH STRANGERS?
“Are you out of your mind?” I said. “What’s the matter—our sex life’s not good enough for you anymore?”
Let’s look at that comment I just made again. It’s important, and it’s at the heart of any woman’s resistance to the idea of going to a Swinger’s Club.
What’s the matter, you’re not attracted to me? You want my permission to fuck someone else? Am I fat? In a heartbeat, a freaking split second, right after he asked me that question, I was feeling very insecure. About me, and more importantly, about us.
A dead silence hung in the air. I was working up a good mad.
Looking back, and looking how I’m trying to develop a career, I can’t help but laugh. Now, I mean. I wasn’t laughing then, believe me.
Spike did have some knowledge of The Lifestyle. And his next words started to calm me down, and got me to listen to him.
“Our sex life is great,” he said. “And I’m not looking to go there to get laid.”
“Then why in the world did you suggest it?”
“Because you said you’d like to go to a club that’s sexy. There’s basically one rule in Swinging, you know. And it’s that the women call the shots.”
“Yeah, right!” I had an image of a woman being dragged; coerced to go to a club by a controlling, domineering husband.
But… Spike wasn’t that way with me. Not in the slightest. He enjoyed me, he looked after and out for me. One aspect of our relationship from the beginning was we became pretty adept at having one another’s back.
It gave me pause. “So, are you telling me that it’s the women at these places that decide if there’s going to be any…”
He smirked. “Hanky panky.”
“Yeah. The women decide?”
He nodded. “Pretty much. The uterus rules at these places.”
He has such a way with words.  He made me a deal—if I didn’t like it, we could leave right away. And furthermore, he promised, we could leave at any time, no—absolutely no recriminations. I’d be stretching, and if I went with an open mind, he’d respect that.
In the couple of weeks leading up to our going, we talked openly and honestly about sex. More so than I ever had before with anyone. So in the course of going to an orgy (well, that’s what I thought at the time, and I was sooo wrong) we became closer. More intimate. Who woulda thunk it?
New Year’s Eve came. I wore a corset over a short skirt with heels. Spike wore a suit. We got in the car, and I was so nervous that I didn’t realize we were there until he had the car parked and asked “You ready?”
Oh my God we’re here! I nodded silently. Just before he opened the door to go in, he said to me again, “Anytime you want to leave, it’s fine. If you want to back out right now, that’s fine too, honey.”
He never called me ‘honey’ before… “Let’s go,” I said, staring at his hand on the door.
Oh boy…I was so nervous. Every time someone looked at me and nodded with a smile, I thought to myself “If I smile back, does that mean I’m going to be expected to have sex with them?”
I had a couple of drinks, and was able to relax. Spike and I hit the dance floor. Again and again and again.  As the night progressed, the dancing got sexier and sexier. Especially when ladies would dance together!
People were incredibly friendly. One agreement that we made before we went was that we were in no way going to have sex with anyone that night. So, when we met people, at the bar, or on the dance floor, we would just say we were newbies. Here’s the funny thing—everyone responded saying “Baby steps”. Take it slow, don’t rush it, stay in your comfort zone.
Naturally, my next thought was ‘Oh, so you don’t want to have sex with me, hunh?’ Look, I was nervous and pretty scattered.
A Couple’s Club is by far, the safest place for a woman to go. The ‘No Means No’ rule in the lifestyle, combined with ‘Ask Before You Touch’ creates an environment where I could be as sexy and alluring as I wanted. I was in the sexiest outfit I ever dared wear out in public, and I was the safest I’ve ever been in a night club.
Once I calmed down and relaxed… Spike was the beneficiary. Dirty dancing on the dance floor became giving head on the dance floor. The look on his face when I backed him against a wall on the floor and got on my knees as the powerful erotic music played… I’ll never forget it. (Neither will he!) And I wasn’t the only woman being so wanton. In public. That was an added rush. I didn’t realize I was (am?) such an exhibitionist. You wouldn’t know that to meet me in the regular world. By the time the night was over, I was getting lessons on pole dancing from a regular member and when we left, my face hurt from laughing so much.
We’ve been to clubs a few more times, and by far, our favorite is the O Zone. First of all it’s the staff. Secondly, is the size—and yes, size does matter. The décor, cleanliness and music round out what Matt and Amanda put on the table. And last, but the most important, is the membership. They’re wonderful people. Sexy as hell, and just plain fun to be around.
And that’s my story! Thanks so much for hosting me and giving me a chance to show off my latest release, Swinger’s O Zone Bash. I enjoyed writing it as much as I’ve enjoyed going to this club for a night on the town!
Review:
There is nothing like a hot New Year's party to liven up the night and that is exactly what you are getting with Mia Moore's new short erotic fiction story Banging in the New Year: Swinger's O-Zone Bash. When two couples get together for a trip to a Toronto night club called O-Zone  (based on a real club) they find an experience like no other. A huge event space, sexy clientele and an adventure unlike any Carrie has ever experienced await her and Josh as they and their friends meet a couple with unexpected attraction. Characters come to life, opening a window into the swinging lifestyle.
I enjoyed this book for the interplay between the characters. The swinging lifestyle isn't one I am very familiar with, but author Mia Moore opens a door into the experience. She shows the give and take and the trust involved to be able to have that kind of relationship with your spouse and still go home feeling loved and cherished. Hot! Hot! Hot! When the ladies get together, things get even more steamy! I have to admit, that was my favorite part! If you are new to the lifestyle, it will show you a great time and if you are experienced, it will but a smile on your face. An engrossing read that wouldn't let me come up for air.
If you want a different kind of club experience that goes beyond the pale and right into the sparkling sensations of a swinging good time, then this book is for you!
4.5/5
About Mia Moore
In a lot of ways, I have been living the dream well before I published my first book. My husband and I live in a nice place in Montreal, Quebec Canada and we each have decent jobs. I’m married to a strong, intelligent and great looking man whose number one priority is to have my back. He rocks my world, and I love rocking his.
We’ve had some pretty hot adventures together, which were the inspiration for my first books.
My ‘day job’ is actually an evening job. I’m a server in a restaurant (who speaks French very, very poorly as I didn’t grow up in Quebec). If you met me at my job, you’d think I was friendly and efficient and you’d tip decently because I looked after you as best I could and you had a good time.
Why do I write? I write for the same reason I love to read. Something happens and I’m swept away by the story. It didn’t happen right away when I began my first story, but it happened pretty quickly. It’s hard to describe… yes, I know, that’s a bad thing for an author to say but it’s true.
I write because I can’t not write. And I love it!
About My Writing
What can happen after Happy Ever After wears off? After the house is bought. The kids on the way. Bills start to pile up. Work gets harder.
Sometimes… time slips by and we get ‘caught up’.  If the picket fence needs a coat of paint, if the car needs a new set of tires… oh for God’s sake—if the sheets on the bed are getting a little worn at the edges… maybe some other stuff is too.
I write about everyday couples that are living normal lives. They have jobs—some have professional careers, homes, some even have kids. They have full lives. But something’s missing. And it used to be there, dammit.
In my books, my characters explore questions like: “How DO you fall for, get turned on again like you were first dating, but with someone who’s been farting in your bed for the last five, ten, or more years?”
I’m talking about ((((THAT))) spark.
The being wanted? No. The being desired? Nope. The being craved spark. Where your partner’s not just thinking about you… but where your partner is obsessed by you. The early sex was awesome, wasn’t it? That craving, and your craving being returned in spades. The kind of sex that stays with you for three days after.
So, what can happen after Happy Ever After?
Happier Ever After.
And, dear reader, that’s what I write about.
